Popular Logging Company Terms

Logging companies cut down, transport, and process wood from trees. If you need timber to produce lumber or other wood products, a logging company can provide your materials. The following are a few common logging company terms to be familiar with.

  • Sawmill – A sawmill is a location where logs are cut into boards. At a sawmill, bark is removed and logs are cut using saws to make lumber of a variety of dimensions. The lumber is then dried naturally or in a kiln. After drying, the surface of lumber is often smoothed for convenient use in construction.
  • Underwater Logging – Underwater logging is the act of cutting down trees from a forest that has been submerged underwater. When a dam or man made reservoir is built, forest in the area becomes submerged, and specialized equipment is used to remove the trees and float them the water’s surface.
  • Paper Pulp – Paper pulp is a product made from wood that is needed to produce paper. The cellulose fibers of soft wood are separated by chemical or mechanical processes at a pulp mill to produce paper pulp.
  • Salvage Logging – Salvage logging is the process of cutting down trees in areas that have been damaged by storms, flooding, fires, or disease. A logging company may cut down all the trees in a damaged area or selectively thin trees. Sometimes a replanting operation may follow salvage logging in order to revitalize the area.
  • Fire Log – A fire log is a manufactured wood product that is designed to burn longer than regular firewood and start on fire easier. A company typically makes fire logs out of compressed sawdust or a sawdust paraffin mix. These logs are often cheaper than traditional woods and more convenient for home use.

Logging companies have existed for many years, and now make up a multi-billion dollar industry. Harvested trees are used to build homes, and make paper and other products like furniture. Lumberjacks cut down the trees, which are then transported to a mill to be processed and distributed. Many pieces of equipment are used in this whole process, such as cranes and logging trucks. Many logging companies also act as suppliers of raw products to the bark mulch industry. Logging companies are a key part of the forestry and lumber industries. You'll often see loggers on construction sites, in forests, and in mills. They cut down and process timber and lumber for distribution to paper, hardwood flooring, and other such companies. Products like hardwoods, Douglas fir, and western red cedar can be dried, cut, and milled according to client specifications. Lumber and timber are very often used to build houses. They are also used in industrial applications. The logging industry had its beginnings in this country many, many years ago. It conjures up images of big, brawny men armed with supplies like cross-cut saws harvesting trees and hauling them back. Today, lumberjacks still use a lot of the common sense tree-cutting tactics that those around the turn of the 20th century used, but now they have access to much larger equipment and machines. This multi-billion dollar industry is also one of the most dangerous. It's no doubt, what with all the heavy-duty machinery, hauling, and cutting involved. Loggers are very often represented by unions and other safety groups. In this day and age, it's wise for a logging company to be pro-active regarding forestry; that's why many boast policies of planting a tree for every one they cut down. The Internet is a good place to start searching for a logging company.
