Building a deck, shed or house - understand the world of retail lumber.

If you had a log-splitter, an industrial planer and have the know-how of a lumberjack, you could go into the forest, chop and mill your own lumber. For the rest of us, there are plenty of lumber yards where you can get premium wood or pine for whatever you're building.

  • Lumber - a term used to define various kinds of hard and soft woods. Lumber is often milled and planed wood, not wood in it's raw and natural state.
  • Plywood - a term to define wood that has been compressed to form large sheets of wood. Often, plywood is used for sub-floors and roofs. Keep in mind that plywood is pressure treated and often made of various types of wood such as pine or poplar.
  • Hard woods - a phrase that defines various types of wood from cherry, oak and teak. Hard woods are often made into long planks to be manufactured as flooring material. Natural wood flooring is often not cheap, but you can find untreated hard woods at discount wood yards.
  • Timber - a term that expresses wood in an un-planed state, much like a log. When a tree is cut, it is then milled and planed to strip it of its bark and shape it into it's retail form. It can also be used as a warning when a tree falls, as in, "TIMBER!"
  • Retail lumber store - a store that sells both un-treated logs as well as treated wood. These stores often sell wholesale. Some stores can be specialty stores dedicated to one type of wood, or wood for one purpose.

If you've got a big building project coming up, you're going to want to take a trip to your local lumber yard. You'll be able to find all the materials you need at a retail outlet. If you are constructing a home from scratch, you may be able to find some discounts on buying in bulk quantities. You'll need a lot of cheap lumber for your home improvement project. Maybe you're an outdoors type and you're looking for logs for your cabin. You'll find materials for all your building needs at lumber and home improvement stores. House construction is an industry that often utilizes the materials from lumber yards. However, furniture makers, boat builders, and other trades and craftsmen all work with wood materials. Some timber naturally lends itself to house construction, while others may be more suitable for manufacturing furniture. This basically comes down to hard or soft wood. Soft like cedar is good for furniture making. Pine is also well suited to this purpose. It responds well to the application of different finishes like varnish. Oak would be more suitable for making planks for flooring. Hard cherry ages well and is good for boats. Plywood, sometimes made from birch, is good for building out interior walls. Pine boards can be pressure treated to ensure they last longer and age better. A company may manufacture fences and logs this way to help them stand up against the elements. This basically entails injecting chemicals directly into the grain. Whatever type of product you're in need of, you'll find it at a quality retail lumber yard.
