Lumber Wholesale definitions

Buying lumber can be expensive, but thrifty buyers can save money and buy wholesale. If you don't live directly by a sawmill or a lumber yard, you can still get good deals at lumber warehouses or builder supply stores. The most important thing when buying lumber, besides getting a good price, is knowing what kind of lumber you need for your project. A furniture builder may prefer mahogany while a contractor constructing the frame of a house may need cedar. The following are several industry terms used for lumber.

  • Lumber Yard – A place where lumber and wood products are sold. Often lumber yards are either attached to sawmills or received timber directly from them. Lumber yards are usually distributors for local stores. To find a lumber yard near you, check local listings.
  • Hardwoods – This type of timber comes from deciduous trees, like mahogany, maple and oak. This wood is more expensive than softwood because it takes these trees longer to grow, but hardwoods are also less likely to absorb moisture.
  • Softwoods – Wood from coniferous trees, like evergreen pine and cedar. They are less expensive and often used for home construction.
  • Composite Wood – Also called engineered wood, composite wood is man-made by binding wood products together with adhesives to make composite materials, like plywood. They are stronger than natural wood and can even replace steel in some buildings. Plywood is one of the cheapest types of composite wood.
  • Pressure Treated Wood – Wood that has been treated by preservatives to help protect against insects like termites and fungi.
  • Builder's Surplus – These stores, also called builder's supply stores, often offer construction products for wholesale prices to builders and contractors.

New buildings and structures could not be constructed without good quality lumber, which is basically timber logs cut into planks or boards. It comes in many different types and qualities, used in many aspects, especially construction. Lumber wholesalers specialize in selling bulk amounts of lumber to contractors, retail home improvement stores, and other clients at a cheap discount. Lumber can come pressure treated, natural, stained, or primed. It can be used in construction of homes, furniture, decks, and doors. Its use really has no limits. Whether you’re taking on a home improvement project and want to put an addition on your house, or whether you’re a contractor looking to stock up on supplies for the new office complex you’ll be building, you need to deal with a lumber wholesaler. In addition to the money savings, you’ll also find that you can get wood like cedar, plywood and mahogany delivered to your construction site to avoid the hassle of picking the supply up and transporting it yourself. Specify what materials you need from the distributor, such as plywood, hardwood, or mahogany, as well as how much, and the wholesaler will do the rest. Certain types of hardwood are ideal for flooring, such as bamboo. Wood can be purchased in planks, strips, or parquet, for ease of installation. Exterior woods like cedar, pine, and mahogany, are great for decks because they resist water and rot well, provided you seal them correctly. Lumber wholesalers may sell composite decking, pergolas, fencing, and frames. The wood comes directly from the lumber yard or saw mill, where it is cut down to size after being harvested. Lumber and timber wholesalers typically operate out of warehouses, offering frequent liquidation sales with low prices.
