Machine Shop Equipment Terms

Machine shop equipment incorporates specialized and complex terminology. Here are some terms that you might encounter when looking for machine shop supplies.

  • Abrasive Wheel - A wheel with an abrasive edge for various types of purposes, including grinding, refinishing and polishing. These are used for car bodies and welding.
  • CNC or Computer Numerical Control - A system within a machine tool that controls the actions and movements of a tool, maintaining a standard for machine tools. CNC machines set a standard for machine shop work.

  • Burnishing - The process of finishing the surface of a metal by using a metal with a harder consistency.
  • Mill m=Machines - Equipment that rotates both the workpiece and the tool, usually with the use of lathes.
  • Coolants - Liquids used in metalworking machines to assist in their function. They are normally oil- or water-based. They are used in machines and assist in lubricating and improving the milling, drilling or other type of function.
  • Diamond Cutting Tool - A cutting tool with diamonds fixed on an abrasive edge. Since diamond is an extremely hard material, it serves to cleanly cut and grind all types of metal.'
  • Gravity Feed Spray Gun - A type of auto body paint sprayer with the paint supply on top.
  • Conventional Feed Spray Gun - An auto body paint dispenser with the paint supply on the bottom. Like many types of machine shop equipment, you can purchase these items second hand.
