Common Terms for Marine Electronics

When researching marine equipment and electronics, it is important to understand the terminology associated with these high tech accessories. Below are several popular terms associated with marine electronics and equipment.

  • GPS - GPS stands for global positioning system. The device is a global system of navigational satellites developed to provide precise positional and velocity data, as well as global time synchronization for air, sea, and land travel.
  • Outboard Motors - Outboard motors are detachable propulsion systems for marine vessels. The motor is attached to outboard brackets on the stern of a boat. Outboard motors can be operated by means of a handle or via cables which connect to some sort of steering apparatus.
  • Fish Finder - A fish finder is an electronic device which uses sonar in order to emit a cone-shaped sound wave. This allows the inhabitants of the boat to locate what is below the surface of the lake, sea, or ocean.
  • Transducer - The transducer is a device that converts one type of energy to another, such as the part of a depth sounder that changes electrical energy into acoustical energy.
  • Plot - A plot is a drawing consisting of lines and points representing certain conditions graphically, as the progress of a craft. It can also refer to drawn lines and points which represent certain conditions graphically.
  • Radar - RADAR is an acronym for radio detection and ranging. It measures distance and direction by a comparison of reference signals with the radio signals reflected or retransmitted from the target whose position is to be determined. Pulse-modulated radar is used for shipboard navigational applications. In this type of radar, the distance to the target is determined by measuring the time required for an extremely short pulse of radio-frequency energy to travel to the target and return to its source as a reflected echo.

Marine electronics are used in countless boats and watercrafts. This includes various radio parts, fish finders, scanning devices and GPS tools. A GPS device is a global positioning system that allows boaters to know what their position or coordinates are on the water. Much of this equipment is for sale in hardware stores and outdoor accessory shops. Different types of watercrafts use different marine electronic products and supplies often. Some of these crafts are fishing boats, while others are large cargo ships. As you may know, some of the electronics used on watercrafts are navigation devices, speakers and waterproof compasses. Virtually all boats and ships want to be able to locate land when needed. After all, when vessels are out at sea, it is easy to get turned around or lost if there is no GPS device. However, small pontoon boats that are used on lakes and rivers may not need these positioning systems. Just so you understand, many marine electronics can be purchased new or used. Some of these devices, such as depth charts, are quite pricey. However, they do allow the boater to determine the water depth below them. This is important when driving large ships, boats and yachts. Some electronics can even be used to plot out courses on the ocean. In order to learn more about marine electronics, boat parts and fishing accessories, you should visit a local dealer on look online for one. This way you can get a good look at various radio devices, navigation systems and other marine supplies.
