Important Marine Terminology

There are countless parts, equipment, and supplies associated with marine travel. Electronics and other accessories are popularly used on many marine vessels. Other parts are far simpler but are still very important. Most of the following components are readily available online or in marine stores.

  • Anchorage – Anchorage refers to an adequate location for a boat to drop anchor. The suitability of a spot is based on different factors such as water depth, wind strength, and water currents and waves. Checking weather and maps online can assist in determining a good anchorage.
  • Beam – Beam refers to the width of a vessel. This is based on the widest section of the boat.
  • Bilge – The bilge is the area below a boat’s floorboards, inside the hull. Water often collects in the bilge and will need to be removed. Bilge pumps and similar bailing equipment are common supplies for this part of the vessel.
  • Chock – Mooring and anchor lines are fed through a chock, which is often shaped like a U to minimize any friction damage.
  • Coaming – A coaming is a lip crafted around the entrance to a lower portion of a vessel, such as a hatch. This helps keep water out.
  • Dinghy – Dinghies are small boats. Dinghies are important supplies for yachts and other large vessels because they can easily ferry passengers to shore.
  • Fender – A fender is a cushion that helps protect a boat from damage that could be caused by contact with another vessel or a mooring structure, like a dock or pier.
  • Ground Tackle – Ground tackle refers to an anchor and all equipment related to anchoring a vessel.
  • Rigging – Rigging is a collective term for all of the lines on a boat.
