Important Marine Terminology

There are countless parts, equipment, and supplies associated with marine travel. Electronics and other accessories are popularly used on many marine vessels. Other parts are far simpler but are still very important. Most of the following components are readily available online or in marine stores.

  • Anchorage – Anchorage refers to an adequate location for a boat to drop anchor. The suitability of a spot is based on different factors such as water depth, wind strength, and water currents and waves. Checking weather and maps online can assist in determining a good anchorage.
  • Beam – Beam refers to the width of a vessel. This is based on the widest section of the boat.
  • Bilge – The bilge is the area below a boat’s floorboards, inside the hull. Water often collects in the bilge and will need to be removed. Bilge pumps and similar bailing equipment are common supplies for this part of the vessel.
  • Chock – Mooring and anchor lines are fed through a chock, which is often shaped like a U to minimize any friction damage.
  • Coaming – A coaming is a lip crafted around the entrance to a lower portion of a vessel, such as a hatch. This helps keep water out.
  • Dinghy – Dinghies are small boats. Dinghies are important supplies for yachts and other large vessels because they can easily ferry passengers to shore.
  • Fender – A fender is a cushion that helps protect a boat from damage that could be caused by contact with another vessel or a mooring structure, like a dock or pier.
  • Ground Tackle – Ground tackle refers to an anchor and all equipment related to anchoring a vessel.
  • Rigging – Rigging is a collective term for all of the lines on a boat.

Marine equipment and supplies are distributed to dealers and consumers all over the world. This industry commonly includes an array of boat engine parts, nautical accessories, used diesel motors, and tackle gear for fishing. Since there are so many different yachts, pontoon boats, and watercrafts for sailing, there are plenty of supplies and accessories involved with this grand industry. As you may be aware, it takes quite a bit of maintenance and care into having and keeping up a boat or watercraft vehicle. Regardless of where you reside in the United States, there is usually a marine equipment and supply store or dealer in your area. These distributors often sell all kinds of paint products, electronic hardware, boat covers, fishing rods, safety gear and cleaning supplies. While one person may need a new anchor for his or her yacht, another customer may require replacement seats for a sport boat. Fortunately there are available supplies and accessories suitable for most watercraft vehicles. A lot of factors depend on the amount of maintenance and repairs your boat or yacht requires. If you are uncertain about specific nautical engine parts or electronic radios for boats, be sure to get professional assistance beforehand. You may want to contact a store or shop that specializes in marine equipment and supplies in order to learn more about what they carry. Most websites list a contact phone number or e-mail for this purpose. This will enable you to focus on any questions or topics that concern you. You can also surf the web to find additional information on hard to find nautical accessories and boat engine parts.
