Martial arts encompasses a wide range of different fighting styles and schools. Sometimes these differences are regional, such as Karate and Kung Fu which originated in different geographical areas. Self Defense Class – In a sense, all martial arts teaches self defense since they instruct the practitioner on methods of defense and attack. However, there are certain classes that focus more on self defense such as Krav Maga, which is used by army soldiers. Muay Thai is also good for self defense, because while it also focuses on attacking, the sport provides instruction on how to defend against attacks by others.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – This type of martial art gained popularity because of its success in the mixed martial art, or MMA, sport. Jiu Jitsu is based on the older martial art of judo. It specializes in techniques involving ground fighting, grappling and even boxing techniques. Like other martial arts, it has a belt ranking systems, with the highest rank being the black belt.
Taekwondo – Taekwondo means the way of the hand and foot, and this sport concentrates mainly on kicking strikes, and is similar to karate.
Kung Fu – This ancient type of fighting includes various teaching techniques of self defense, but most importantly it teaches about weapons training.
