Martial Arts Instruction Terms

Martial arts encompasses a wide range of different fighting styles and schools. Sometimes these differences are regional, such as Karate and Kung Fu which originated in different geographical areas. Others are determined due to their fighting style, such as boxing which only uses the arms. Many forms of martial arts training classes are offered. Below are some popular terms used for martial arts classes to help gain an overall perspective of the sport.

  • Self Defense Class – In a sense, all martial arts teaches self defense since they instruct the practitioner on methods of defense and attack. However, there are certain classes that focus more on self defense such as Krav Maga, which is used by army soldiers. Muay Thai is also good for self defense, because while it also focuses on attacking, the sport provides instruction on how to defend against attacks by others.
  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – This type of martial art gained popularity because of its success in the mixed martial art, or MMA, sport. Jiu Jitsu is based on the older martial art of judo. It specializes in techniques involving ground fighting, grappling and even boxing techniques. Like other martial arts, it has a belt ranking systems, with the highest rank being the black belt.
  • Taekwondo – Taekwondo means the way of the hand and foot, and this sport concentrates mainly on kicking strikes, and is similar to karate.
  • Kung Fu – This ancient type of fighting includes various teaching techniques of self defense, but most importantly it teaches about weapons training.

    Martial arts instruction has gained popularity over the years. There are literally over one hundred different styles of martial arts practices all over the world. Some of these are Japanese karate, Brazilian jiu jitsu, Korean taekwondo, and American boxing. Many men and women train in a specific style of self defense for years in order to reach an advanced level. It is always prudent to find a class or school that has a teacher who can instruct the kung fu or judo style correctly.

    There are so many different styles of martial arts, which can make it difficult for some people to choose the right art or self defense style to suit their needs. One thing you should realize is that a martial arts lesson is not meant to simply teach you how to kick or fight. Most people typically enter a karate or kung fu school for self defense and fitness reasons. As you progress in a martial art, your belt or sash color will change. Eventually you can learn how to use a weapon, such as a bo staff, tonfa, or sais. Depending on the local or international martial arts academy you train at, various uniforms can be involved. Typically the dojo or kwoon will supply the proper apparel.

    There is plenty of information provided online about martial arts like boxing, karate, jiu jitsu, and Chinese kung fu. It is helpful to search the web specifically for the style you are interested in. You may also want to visit a self defense class or school in your area. There are many professionals that instruct self defense across the United States.
