Mastectomy Forms & Prosthesis Terms to Know

After a mastectomy or radiation treatments for cancer, there are many products available to reconstruct the look of a breast, including bras, swimsuits and prosthesis especially designed for a woman's active lifestyle. If you have had a mastectomy or reconstructive surgery, you might want to buy clothes and products made especially for breast cancer patients and survivors. Medicaid will even pay for many of these items. If you are looking for a mastectomy product, there are many types available. Before you go into a store, here are some mastectomy forms and prosthesis terms to know.

  • Breast Forms - Worn after a mastectomy to balance the body and prevent neck and back pain. Breast forms come in silicone, gel foam and fiberfill in varying weights to simulate a lifelike breast. There are also breast forms that attach directly to your chest. Fiberfill, gel and foam breast forms are very light and are best for older patients. If a woman has a lumpectomy or partial area of her breast removed, a partial form can be made to fill in the missing breast tissue.
  • Compression Bras - These are worn post op and are very tight to provide support to the breast and sides. These will help you get back to your routine, including exercise, after surgery. These are also worn after reconstructive breast surgery to help the breast heal.
  • Mastectomy Swimsuits - For the beach or water exercise, you can find swimsuits that accommodate breast forms. There are a number of stores and styles for breast cancer survivors.
  • Mastectomy Camisoles - You can wear these instead of mastectomy bras. These camisoles have a pocket where you can place a breast form.

Some women must undergo a mastectomy due to breast cancer. This leaves them without one or both breasts, which can be a blow to the body both physically and emotionally. Many women in these circumstances decide to get forms and prosthesis devices to replace the look and feel of a normal breast after reconstructive surgery. Prosthetic devices in general act as a replacement for a missing body part, and are necessary for those who have experienced an accident or been touched by disease. Manufacturers of mastectomy forms, attachments, and prosthesis make and sell a wide range of implants, special bras, enhancements, and accessories. After the surgery operation, and recovery, women can enjoy having breasts again, complete with nipples and other natural features. This allows them to wear a bathing suit again, and just feel better about themselves in general. Dealers of external mastectomy apparel, often found online, may sell anything from breast forms and back supports to swimwear and prosthetic nipples. These products, especially breast forms, are made to resemble natural body parts and movements. Some are more expensive than others. Some may be covered by insurance. Women in need of external mastectomy forms, clothing, and prosthetic devices can consult with their doctors, who should have some recommendations on where to get an implant or breast form after reconstructive surgery or a lumpectomy. Many surgeons deal with the same supplier and will simply order the right part needed for pre and post surgery. Most prosthetics such as inserts are made of silicone, which is a type of plastic. This is the most natural feeling of all materials, is a quality alternative to the real thing, and is easy to manipulate. Others, such as bras and covers, are made of foam.
