Useful Material Handling Equipment Terms

Material handling equipment is needed for countless factories, warehouses, and industrial facilities worldwide. Often this equipment includes conveyor belts, forklifts, hoister devices, and motorized trolleys. It simply depends on what the specific factory or warehouse facility requires for material handling. Heavy cargo and crates are typically moved with a forklift or hoist device, and placed on pallets to be stored. Manual dolly equipment is also used at times to move and store products. Below you will find a few helpful terms and definitions regarding material handling equipment.

  • Automated Sortation – This is the electronic recognition of products and cartons by size or code. This technology allows these items to be sorted into specific groups, and it is commonly necessary for manufacturing plants and factories.
  • Catwalk – An elevated service platform found in warehouses and factories. It serves as a walkway to handling equipment, machine controls, and other devices. This catwalk is not designed to hold a lot of weight.
  • Closed Circuit Conveyor – This is an arrangement of conveyor belts that are able to move items or material through all parts of a circuit. The undistributed materials or remaining portion that is left over is automatically returned to the starting point.
  • Dock Leveler – These are used at warehouse facilities and delivery areas, and are adjustable platforms, typically in the shape of a rectangle. They allow trucks of different sizes to back up to docking or loading zones. The platform can be raised up or down to suit different needs.
  • Gravity Conveyor – A wheel-based or roller conveyor system. Objects and materials are placed on this conveyor, and can be moved manually or by gravity. These are often used in factories and sorting facilities.

Material handling equipment is commonly used to move and transport bulk goods. This kind of industrial machinery is often used for storage facilities, warehouse environments and shipyards. For decades, commercial company locations have been making use of wholesale and discount handling equipment in order to move around large crates, drums, and containers. While some of these machines lift with a jack, others place crates on shelving and pallet areas. However, there is a certain level of safety and expertise always involved.

The use of handling equipment is typically seen on a dock or in a storage facility. These are both places where professionals wheel around drum containers and crates on dolly devices and forklift machines. Depending on the distributor involved, the material being handled can vary. While some storage facilities are dealing with bulk foods, others are dealing with industrial supplies, and even hazardous materials. Many dock yards and discount storage warehouses move and store products that are brought in by watercrafts. The material handling equipment they use must always be in prime condition to deal with the bulk loads and heavy containers that are placed on shelving.

The internet is a good place to begin finding additional information on material handling equipment. Not only can you see where commercial company locations are located that sell wholesale equipment, but you can also find out if this is a big business in your area. There should be official websites to refer to online that discuss this industry in detail. You can likely contact a facility directly to learn more.
