Terms to Understand When Buying Mattresses

When purchasing mattresses, the size, support, and retail prices become key concerns of consumers. Understanding the terminology used by dealers, wholesale warehouses and manufacturers helps you decide the style and brand matching your specific needs.

  • Box Springs – A box spring fits into a metal frame providing a hard surface for the unit. This frame supports the unit to prevent bending or warping. If you have a solid foundation, such as a platform bed, the box spring isn't necessary.
  • Coverings – Materials covering the interior of a mattress must be durable to keep interior fillings from escaping. Some materials protect against dust mites and bed bugs.   • Firmness – Some people prefer to sleep on hard or firm surfaces while others like to be cushioned with a soft unit. Pillow top items provide a comforting pillow of softness that raises the height by a few inches. Water-filled or memory foam units mold to your body, eliminating pressure points. Some units offer adjustable coils that fill chambers with air to provide a range of firmness settings. Sleep number systems let you set the firmness on different zones.
  • Sizes – King and California king are the largest and easily fits two people with room to spare. Queens are slightly smaller and offer enough space for a couple and a child or pet. Full, also called a double, provide plenty of space for a single, cozy quarters for a couple. Twins are the smallest option and fit one person.
