Terms to Understand When Buying Mattresses

When purchasing mattresses, the size, support, and retail prices become key concerns of consumers. Understanding the terminology used by dealers, wholesale warehouses and manufacturers helps you decide the style and brand matching your specific needs.

  • Box Springs – A box spring fits into a metal frame providing a hard surface for the unit. This frame supports the unit to prevent bending or warping. If you have a solid foundation, such as a platform bed, the box spring isn't necessary.
  • Coverings – Materials covering the interior of a mattress must be durable to keep interior fillings from escaping. Some materials protect against dust mites and bed bugs. Air and water filled units usually have a thick vinyl layer covered in a softer fabric to prevent leaks. Crib units also uses vinyl to make it easy to clean up after a diaper leak.
  • Filler Materials – The interiors of the units store items like air, water, memory foam, or organic materials. Futon pads may contain buckwheat hulls.
  • Firmness – Some people prefer to sleep on hard or firm surfaces while others like to be cushioned with a soft unit. Pillow top items provide a comforting pillow of softness that raises the height by a few inches. Water-filled or memory foam units mold to your body, eliminating pressure points. Some units offer adjustable coils that fill chambers with air to provide a range of firmness settings. Sleep number systems let you set the firmness on different zones.
  • Sizes – King and California king are the largest and easily fits two people with room to spare. Queens are slightly smaller and offer enough space for a couple and a child or pet. Full, also called a double, provide plenty of space for a single, cozy quarters for a couple. Twins are the smallest option and fit one person.

Mattresses are the pads that people place on top of metal bedframes. People recline or sleep on these mattress pads. Selecting the right size and frame for a mattress allow consumers to maximize their sleep experience. The various categories to use when shopping at mattress stores include materials used, the sizes and dimensions chosen, and supporting frames employed. People going to a retail store can buy a mattress after testing it on a showroom. Buyers can find mattresses in bulk in a wholesale warehouse. Common sizes include twin, double, queen and king, listed here in ascending order of dimensions. The specific dimensions can vary in accordance with the particular brand. A twin pad is also known as a single. Parents will buy a twin for their child after he or she has outgrown the crib. Adult bed buyers usually choose queen or double. King-sized mattresses give sleepers more room to stretch their arms. Rather than for a bedroom, a mattress might be selected for a living room futon. Moreover, consumers will also be presented with a choice between firmer or softer pads. Couples that share the same sleeping area can choose a medium firm pad. The size and plushness of the pad will determine the size of sheets to purchase. Sometimes the store may give complimentary pillows with a mattress purchase but customers will be responsible for the pillow cover. Some mattresses made for more specialized purposes include those filled with water. Air mattresses with remotes are available to consumers that are interested in customizing the pad's firmness. Alternately, mattresses can also be manufactured with memory foam. In general, people can improve their quality of sleep with the right mattress.
