Terms to Know About Mattresses and Bedding

The classic sales pitch from a mattress store will remind you that you spend a third of your life asleep therefore it makes sense to have a comfy bed set. Everyone has their own preference in bedding from firm to pillow top and more. If you are in the market for a new mattress, pad or bedding these are some terms to know.

  • Box Spring – A box spring mattress is made from a large wooden frame with springs inside covered by cloth. These mattresses increase height of the bed and absorb shock. Some spring mattresses are firm and require an additional pad for softness.
  • Denomination – Denomination describes the size of a mattress which range from crib to a grand king which is 80 x 98 inches. Despite the name, twin beds are ideal for one person while full, queen and king can accommodate two people.
  • Orthopedic Mattress – Orthopedic mattresses provide extra back support for those who suffer from back pain. Memory foam is the modern material of the day known to provide the most support.
  • Duvet – A duvet is a large, soft bag the size of the top of your bed which is typically filled with feathers or down. Duvets covers typically come with the duvet as a set.
  • Polyurethane – Mattresses made from polyurethane are known as memory foam. This material was designed by the space industry and is popular because the mattress molds to the form of the body lying on it.
  • Futon – A futon is a piece of furniture which can be used as a couch and laid out as a bed for dual purpose use.

Mattresses and bedding are used all over the world by kids and adults. In the last couple of decades, the bedding market has really expanded with a large variety of foam mattresses, organic cotton sheets, down comforters, and silk linens. At this point, there are hundreds of options available when it comes to duvets, covers, bedspreads and quilts. These linens and bedding products are sold in king, queen, single and twin sizes to suit most beds and futons. There is a lot to consider regarding the bed and mattress market. While one person may be after a down pillow and silk pillowcase, another consumer may prefer a pillow top, latex or foam mattress for his/her king size bed. Then there are traditional coil spring mattresses available at discount rates these days. Although some of these are designed for baby cribs, others are suited for a double size bed frame. Air mattresses and quilt sets are also common nowadays. Many of these offer more support than the original foam beds provide. Some duvets, sheets and comforters are even sold with these contemporary mattresses at times. It just depends on the bedding or linens store, and what specials they offer. One way to acquire more information and details concerning mattresses or bedding is by getting in touch with any local distributors. This way you can ask questions and get specifics pertaining to an air mattress, quilt, pillow, or kids comforter set you are interested in. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to purchase.
