Tips for Buying a Metal Detector
If you are in the market for a metal detector, whether for work or pleasure, consider the following tips to guide your purchase:

Tip #1: Identify goals or needs for the machine.
The first factor that should guide your decision making process is the goal you have in using this machine. If it is something you plan to use only occasionally, or for basic projects or entertainment, then you may not need to invest in the latest, most precise and expensive technology. However, if you plan to use the metal detector for work or to help you find valuable material under ground, then you should be prepared to invest in a quality piece of equipment.

Tip #2: Set a budget.
Once you know how you plan to use the machinery, you can decide how much you are willing to spend. Set your budget before leaving for the store so that you can look within your price range and not be tempted by other, more expensive models.

Tip #3: Learn about the different types of metal detecting technology.
Beat Frequency Oscillation (BFO) metal detectors rely upon old, cheap technology and are primarily marketed as either children's toys or inexpensive, handheld units. While a BFO unit can certainly identify the presence of metal, it has a hard time distinguishing between the types. A Very Low Frequency (VLF) model is the most common type and are good at detecting between silver and gold. Some VLF models also use transmitters and receives to minimize noise from minerals in the dirt. Pulse induction detectors are used for sensing metals under water, rather than under earth.

Panning is how the American's found precious metals, such as gold, in a the rivers and dirt back during the Gold rush. Today, metal detecting equipment makes it much easier for you to find a variety of lost treasures and valuable metals without having to expend a lot of energy. Professional metal detecting equipment bought from retail stores can be used to find metal objects lost in the sand on a beach, in a river or other body of water, and other locations like grassy fields and construction sites. Before you buy a detector, though, you will need to make sure that you find a dealer that has new and used products that you want at a cheap price. If you follow these guidelines, you should be able to determine which dealer is best for you to buy from. You should ask the stores how long they have been in business. This will help you determine how much experience they have with metal detectors that are used to search for lost white gold, iron, and other metals. Ask the suppliers if they have an online catalog so that you can look at all of the machines and accessories that they carry. This will help you determine if they have the machines that are right for you. Ask them what levels of customer service they offer. Some companies include rush delivery in their prices, but other charge extra. Ask them if they offer wholesale discounts to customers who buy multiple pieces of equipment so that you can take advantage of special deals.
