Important Mexican Goods Terms

Many of the popular and valuable items manufactured in Mexico are available in the U.S. through goods distributors. Whether you're looking for Mexican specialty foods or souvenirs, they are easy to find at an import store. Here are some terms of Mexican items you might encounter:

  • Serape - A colorful Mexican blanket, usually with vivid stripes, that serves as an attractive decorative piece.
  • Poncho - A large, loose shirt that provides warmth and outer protection. The apparel may be made of wool, cotton or a polyester blend.
  • Charro Hat - A wide rimmed traditional hat worn by Mexican cowboys, also known as a sombrero. They may exhibit colorful designs or be made of straw.
  • Terra Cotta - A type of clay pottery material popular in Mexico. Terra cotta is used to make pots, figurines, vases, dishes and other types of pottery.
  • Rustic Furniture - A style of furniture popular in Mexico, often featuring fine, handcrafted wood items.
  • Palm Baskets - Baskets woven out of palm. This process is also found in handcrafted tortilla baskets, coasters and hot pads.
  • Tortilla Holder - A convenient device for storing, heating and keeping tortillas warm. It is often available from stores that specialize in Mexican goods.
  • Huaraches - Mexican sandals composed of a leather woven straps and leather or rubber soles.
  • Corn Husks - The dried husk of corn, prepared for use as a tamale wrapper. You can find tamale corn husks at Mexican food or goods stores.
  • Piteado Belt - Also known as a Mariachi belt, piteado is a style of belt with an embroidered technique. Leather is embroidered with thread in a decorative design. This technique is also used for sandals, saddles and other items.
