Common Millwork Terms

Millwork is the production and manufacturing of interior wood pieces. These products include doors, window casings and cabinets. While millwork is done in a factory, each piece may include decorative trim that is used in a specific architecture design. While the aesthetics and trim on some wood pieces and lumber may be mass produced, others can be custom ordered. Specialty pieces will need to have certain dimensions, specific shape or design. While the quality of custom pieces are better, the prices will be higher as well. As technology has advanced, millwork has incorporated composite materials and high quality plastics for the production of various items.

  • Stock Millwork - Stock millwork is a pattern and layout that is mass produced and readily available from a manufacturer.
  • Glazing - Glazing is the process of inserting glass into doors and other wood products.
  • Jambs - Jambs are the wood that surrounds an interior door.
  • Primer - Primer is the initial coat of paint in an application where there are at least two coats of paint used. A primer is essential for better adhesion, durability and protection.
  • Casing - Casing is the process of applying framework to a door or window.
  • Applique - An applique is an ornamental wood that has been carved and placed for decoration on an item. This piece does not add to the structural significance and is just for aesthetics.
  • Crown Molding - Crown molding is a decorative element that can be added to architecture to flare out to a finished top edge. Crown molding is generally used for capping walls, pilasters and cabinets. Crown molding is applied to the area where the ceiling and wall meet and is the highest point along furniture and cabinetry.

Millwork manufacturers are professionals that deal with wood products and supplies for home interiors and building construction. There are several of these company or manufacturer locations around the globe. Many of them specialize in custom cabinets, decorative wood mould features for home interiors, and ornate trim made from lumber like oak or maple. These mills build various products from timber, and shape them to suit specific needs and preferences. Some woods that are used are ply, cherry, pine, oak, and cedar. Major manufacturers that specialize in millwork have to utilize modern technology, machines and tools in order to deliver excellent results. Dimensions, measurements and shapes are very important when it comes to creating custom moulds for residential home interiors, or unique cabinets for kitchens. These are important features that can really increase the value or a home. Since many people choose to remodel their homes, they are typically seeking out specific trim, custom moulds, and high quality wooden cabinets at prices they can afford. Professional mills have to take planks of lumber and make them into the trim, moulds, and doors people are looking for. This can take a great deal of time, effort, and expertise. Typically these company locations deliver the products to the buyers once they are completed. You may be able to learn more about millwork manufacturers and companies by speaking with a worker in a local home improvement store. After all, these professionals deal with lumber materials, various types of trim, interior moulds and cabinets all the time.
