Motorcycle and Motor Scooter Terms to Know

Motorcycles and motor scooters are popular means of transportation for people because they use less gas than a traditional car. However, like cars they do require repairs and maintenance to keep them running. Because there are many different types of motorcycles and motor scooters some popular terms used for them are defined below.

  • Motor Scooter – A single or double person transport that features a platform for the operator's feet and a step-through frame. These are low-power vehicles, with engines ranging from 50 to 250 cc. However, there are some high-end scooters that do have more powerful engines up to 800 cc.
  • Motorized Bicycle -A cheaper form of a motor scooter than blends a bicycle with a gas powered engine, though some clean-air models use electric engines. They also have transmissions to assist in handling, but the optimal terrain for bicycles in on the street. Motor bikes require less repairs than motor scooters and motorcycles, but they will need to have their wheels changed more often than a regular bicycle.
  • Moped – This type of vehicle often resembles motorcycles, but their engines are considerably smaller. Like motor scooters, most of their engines have a maximum power of 50 cc, but because of this mopeds are allowed to be driven in many countries by younger drivers. They are a good practice vehicle for a motorcycle.
  • Motorcycle – The most popular type of the single rider automotives. There are several subtypes, such as cruisers, which in America are often identified with Harley Davidson, sport-bikes, which reach high speeds very rapidly and all terrain vehicles. They use manual transmissions which are controlled on the handlebars. In many countries users need a special license to operate a motorcycle. Like cars they too need their oil changed and regular inspections of their brake and tire systems.

Motorcycle and motor scooter repairs and services are performed by mechanics who have the proper equipment and training. Repairs include replacing parts, fixing a hole in a tire, or rebuilding a carburetor. Services include oil changes, tune-ups, and inspections. Some mechanics specialize in collision repairs. They look at the bike to determine where the damage is and what types of repairs need to be made. If insurance is involved, they give a price quote to the insurance to let them know how much it will cost them to repair the bike. If not, the owner of the bike is notified and they can determine what they want to do. If a bike has been in a crash, the mechanic must keep safety in mind to ensure the bike is able to be safe while driving on the road in the future. Auto shops work with motor cycles and motor scooters with a manual or automatic transmission. Owners are able to speak with a mechanic to talk about any performance problems the bike has recently had, so the mechanic has an idea on where to look for a problem. Mechanics fix problems with the engine, exhaust system, and brakes. Some mechanics sell accessories for bikes, including motorcycle mounts, overhaul kits, and parts that the owner can replace on their own at home instead of paying the mechanic to do it for them. Restoration of a motorcycle or motor bike can be a long process, due to having to search for a specific type of part, finding and fixing any electrical problems, or coming up with the money to finish the project. Mechanics are trained to communicate with owners about where they are in the process and how much things are going to cost to restore it.
