Important Motorcycle Terms

Motorcycles are one of the most popular ways to travel in the world. There are many models that are designed to meet the specific needs of the rider, including cost and efficiency. If you are looking for a bike, you probably have an idea of what you need it to do and how you need to use it. Here is a list of terms that can help you determine the type of vehicle that best suits your needs.

  • Moped – These are low powered and usually have pedals. They are one of the safest power driven two wheelers, and due to their popularity, many new and used models can be found for sale on the market.
  • Sport – These high performance motorcycles are quick, accelerate fast and corner well. They are ridden in specific motocross events and many are modified to increase speed, braking and other performance issues.
  • Scooter – These have a step through frame and a platform for the driver’s feet. They are low power and are generally a low cost purchase. Many classic models can be found for sale cheaply.
  • Dirt Bike – These are specially designed for off road travel. These machines are simpler in design and lighter than their street going counterparts. They usually have high ground clearance, long suspension travel and knobby tires.
  • Cruiser – These are one of the most expensive styles of machine that can purchased. They are the hallmark of certain dealers and are famous for the riding position of the operator. The feet of the driver will be forward and the hands are up high, giving the impression of sitting back slightly. There are some dealers that specialize in custom work and are highly sought after for modifications. These models are most often purchased new, though many used models are on the market.

Motorcycles are two-wheeled motor vehicles popular with adults of all ages and backgrounds. These motor vehicles can come equipped with sidecars or saddles, or they can come standard. People can buy new or used motorcycles, depending on their style and budget. Motorcycles have been around in some form or another for quite some time. The very first steam-powered motorcycle came on the scene back in 1867. At first, these vehicles were used primarily as a mode of transportation. But by the 1960s, motorcycles became more like toys for the uninhibited than for essential transportation. Where does one find a new or used motorcycle for sale? Motorcycle enthusiasts can head to a dealership, salvage yard, auto body repair shop, or online to find and buy a motorcycle or related vehicle such as a moped, cruiser, ATV, or trike. Whether your interest lies with choppers, street bikes, or sports cycles, chances are there's a new or used motorcycle dealership near you. You can even bid online or in person at an auction if you're looking for a vintage bike, or check out a junk yard for cheap frames and parts and accessories. Many store dealers will take trades as part of a motorcycle purchase. Some auto body shops specialize in customized motorcycles, where experts on hand will trick out your cycle according to your specifications. Many dealers also offer renting and leasing options on their products for sale, whether for scooters, dirt bikes, or ATVs. Don't forget the safety equipment. New and used motorcycle dealers also usually have a fully-equipped shop selling accessories, such as apparel, helmets, seats, gloves, and jackets in a variety of styles and colors for scooters and cycles.
