Helpful Terms Related to Mufflers and Exhaust Systems

All motor vehicles have mufflers and exhaust systems. After all, this is essential for cars, trucks, minivans, and SUVs to function on gasoline and diesel fuel. Unfortunately at times, new parts are required for motor vehicles, such as catalytic converters, exhaust pipes, and manifold kits. Luckily there are automotive specialists all over the country that offer these parts and accessories. However, it is certainly helpful to have a good understanding of this business before buying anything. Below are some helpful terms that apply to mufflers and exhaust systems.

  • Automotive Manifold – This is a part of a motor vehicle engine that provides a fuel and air mixture to the vehicle’s cylinders. The combustion mixture allows the car or vehicle to run. Some parts involved are the carburetor, exhaust pipe, throttle body, and fuel injection components.
  • Catalytic Converter – A part or device that is added to a motor vehicle to convert toxic exhaust fumes or emissions into non-toxic exhaust. The converter encourages a chemical reaction inside of it, which in turn alters the exhaust fumes before they are released into the atmosphere. These converters are mandatory on some old automobiles.
  • Cylinder Head – This part is found on top of a cylinder block, and when it closes, a combustion is formed inside the combustion chamber, below. This head essentially provides a passage or space for fuel and air to feed into the cylinder, and this enables exhaust to escape.
  • Combustion Chamber – The part of a motor vehicle engine where the gasoline or diesel fuel is burned. This allows for the automobile to function or run.
  • Duel Side Exit Exhaust System – This is a system that has an exhaust pipe located on both sides of the vehicle’s rear. It provides less restriction when fuel exhaust is released from the car.
