Terms Related to Multimedia Services The following are some terms that are related to multimedia services:
Analog: Analog is a method of recording that uses wavelengths, including ridges and valleys, to chart audio and video movements.
Compression: Compression is the process by which digital files, particularly those on a computer, are reduced in size. They take up less space and can be transferred faster because there are less bytes involved. There is hardware and software that can accomplish this. Decompression is necessary to playback or otherwise access the file.
Digitalization: Digitalization is the method of changing a file from analog format into digital format. Digital files are composed of binary information, which is just ones and zeros, which means they take up less space and can be transferred faster than analog files. Files that have gone through digitalization may be referred to as digitized.
Firewall: A firewall is hardware or software that protects files in a computer from unauthorized access. This is particularly important in systems that are connected to the web.
HDTV: High definition television, or HDTV, a quality digital format that is commonly used for visual productions. HDTV video has better picture quality that results from its bigger picture and crisper horizontal lines. The sound quality of HDTV programs and movies is better, too. It is comparable to that of compact discs.
LAN: A local area network, or LAN, is a system connecting a group of computers. Sharing files within a LAN requires significantly less, if any, download time.
Pixel: A pixel, short for picture element, is a small colored dot that combines with other small colored dots to form an image.
Resolution: Resolution refers to how clear an image is. This is determined by how many pixels are present in the picture. More pixels mean a better resolution.
Video Capture Card: A video capture card records and digitizes pictures or videos for computer storage and viewing. Video capture cards automatically compress files, too.
Whiteboard: A whiteboard is a program that can be accessed by multiple users via a LAN or web connection. A whiteboard allows for simultaneous viewing and editing of multimedia files.
