Tips for Choosing a Music Dealer
The following are some tips to help you choose a music dealer:

Tip #1: Inspect the Inventory
Of course, the first thing you should check when looking into music dealers is what they have in their warehouses. After all, if you are a drummer it does not do you any good to frequent a store that carries mostly guitars. It is also a great idea to work with a shop that carries accessories, sheet music, and other important extras. You should make sure the shop’s instruments are professionally displayed and are obviously in good condition. A store filled with instruments that are just propped against the wall and have broken strings and other parts is definitely a red flag.

Tip #2: Examine the Dealer’s Expertise
Do not expect a music dealer to be the expert on every single kind of instrument, but that person should at least have working knowledge of the instruments that the store carries. You do not want to rely on a dealer who does not know the difference between a clarinet and an oboe.

Tip #3: Get the Sale Details
You should always know what the shop’s return policies and guarantees are. Do not be surprised by limited warranties, though, especially if you are buying a used instrument. This detail is especially important if you happen to select an online music dealer. Whenever possible, try out your potential purchase for at least a few minutes before completing the transaction.

Tip #4: Think About the Future
All instruments will need periodic maintenance. Try to choose a music dealer that offers instrument repairs. You will spend less time and money this way because you will not have to ship your instrument off somewhere to be fixed. Also, check on the store’s trade in policy. A lot of people begin with an inexpensive musical instrument and then move on to a higher quality one. Trade ins are a great way to save money on a new instrument, especially since many dealers will give you more for a store credit than they would for a regular resell.

If you own a music store that sells instruments and other supplies to musicians and students, then you will need to find a music equipment distributor that can give you access to all of the instruments and accessories that you need. You can find many musical instruments distributors in the directory and on the Internet. With so many options to choose from, you might not know which one is best for your store. By following these guidelines, you should be able to choose one that fits your shop's needs. When you first contact the dealers, ask them how long they have been in business. You will want to choose one with several years of experience because they usually have access to more microphones, headphones, pick sets, stands, tuners for keeping equipment in tune, basses, drummers, composition paper for writing a song's melody and harmony, and wind and string instruments that have the sounds you want. Ask the dealer if they have an online catalog that show s all of the supplies that they have in stock. During certain times of the year, such as around the holidays or when school is starting, you might want to have a sale on some items. In order to have a sale and still make a profit, you need to find a distributor with low prices. Ask them to give you written price quotes for the products and services that you need so that you can compare them and decide which ones match your shops budget.
