Music Production Services Terms to Know

For many of us, music defines our lives. Audio and music production combine art, science, and technology in order to produce sounds, songs, and beats which are pleasing to the ear and mind. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of the world of music production, we must first understand the terminology associated with it. Below are several terms to be familiar with when researching music recording and production services.

  • Sound Design - A sound designer is responsible for creating and sourcing the sound effects and music for a film or theatrical production. This may include working with the composer and director in order to get the desired sonic effect for the scene. This is a creative process but may well involve mixing and audio editing to get the desired result.
  • Stinger or Bumper - A stinger or bumper is a short clip of music that can be used to introduce, end, or link various sections of an audio or audiovisual production. They are usually less than fifteen seconds in length and are used as punctuating elements of many productions including podcasts and radio shows.
  • Studio - A studio is a room or set of rooms specially equipped for broadcasting radio or television programs, recording phonograph records, or other classes of software and media such as CDs, and other electronic digital media like MIDI files. It can also be a learning environment which offers on site, hands on classes in Audio Engineering.
  • Audio Editing - Audio editing is the process of manipulating audio to alter length, speed, and volume or to create additional versions such as loops. Audio editing is almost always done using a computer and audio editing software, but in the past, tape and razor blades were used to splice and tape together analogue soundtracks.

Music production services produce music of all kinds, such as jazz and rock. They use the latest in technology for recording, editing, mixing, mastering, and labeling audio demos into CDs for distribution. Utilizing digital, electronic, and analog equipment, software, and hardware, music production services can help musicians lay down their tracks. Music is a big part of many people's daily lives. It takes a lot to get a song on the air, and most don't even make it that far. It takes dedication, perseverance, and plenty of network contacts to create a live album or even a demo. Instruments may also be involved, along with vocals. All of this usually takes place in a recording studio, which is a room where music beats are recorded and mixed by producers. Individuals can rent out recording studios, paying a certain amount of money for a specified time period. Production companies usually own and operate recording studios, led by producers who provide bookings for all types of musical styles, including pop, country, and classical. Music production services may offer commercial audio recording work, digital media services, project conversion and archival, and live recording consulting. Recording studios usually feature mixing consoles, live rooms, instruments, and vocal booths. Musical engineers skilled at mixing and editing can provide services such as audio mastering, music instrument digital interface (MIDI) production, sound design, and video production. Music production services often offer sample drafts and demos using state-of-the-art equipment. Musicians looking to get their songs on CD should first consider their budget, then head to the Internet for resources or follow industry referrals.
