Terms to Know About Music Stores

From adults to kids, the music store, whether in your local neighborhood or online, is bound to have plenty of products to expand a person’s love for music. Music shops sell instruments and even classic records, phonographs and more. If you are interested in buying an instrument, sheet music or other things of the sort, these are some terms to know.

  • Sheet Music – Sheet music differs from a whole book of music because it features typically just one song and is unbound. Sheet music varies for different instruments. For example, the notes shown on a sheet for drums is different than for piano or violin.
  • LP Record – Many people still collect and listen to records. An LP record is a long play which means it typically has 4-5 songs on each side of the record that can be listened to.
  • Compact Disc – A compact disc is much more commonly known as a CD. A CD is a digital disc which holds audio recordings. Some stores buy and sell used CDs.
  • Amplifier – An amplifier is a device which increase the volume of instruments such as guitars and microphones. Amplifiers are typically used by bands on stage.
  • Wind Instruments – Wind instruments feature a tube and mouthpiece and are played by blowing air into them. Some examples are clarinets, flutes and more which can be rented or bought from an online or local music store.
  • String Instruments – Much like the name implies, string instruments feature strings which vibrate when played to create music.
  • Indie – Indie is a genre of music which features bands that do not sign and record with major labels. Local music shops are known to sell a wide variety of music for customers.

    Music stores are great places to hunt down new bands, purchase a new instrument, and connect with other people with similar interests. Many of these stores stock everything from new and used CDs, to old vinyl records, from sheet music, to instrumental equipment and accessories. Music stores can also be referred to as record stores and CD shops. Music shops, besides having a wide selection of merchandise, also have an extensive music selection. Many of the most common genres include classical, R & B, rock, alternative and rap. The store will stock all of the new compact discs and albums by the leading chart-topping bands. While these stores will include a more generic selection of every genre for sale, for a specific album or DVD, you may have to check specialty shops or the online music market. For instance, a music shop that specializes in instruments will carry a large selection of guitars, pianos, violins and flutes. Another alternative is checking online stores for new and used instruments; you may even be able to find cheaper ones online. However, for musicians that actually want to try playing the instrument before buying it, they will need to shop in person. Finally, many large music stores work closely with recording artists that are looking to promote their latest album. They will set up events where the artists come down to the store and sign fans' discs. Check out music store websites in your area to see if any of these events are happening near you.
