Tips for Finding a Singing Coach
If you are interested in becoming a singer, or simply want to fine tune some of your vocal skills as part of an overall music curriculum, the following tips will help you find a coach or classes that can best meet your needs:

Tip #1: Make sure you find a coach or teacher that specializes in your vocal style.
While some of us not fully schooled in the area of music vocals might think that any vocal coach can teach any singer, this is not always the case. It is important that, say, a folk singer, work with a teacher or class that covers folk style singing. The history, theory, and techniques covered in folk music, for example, will be drastically different from those that are covered in opera, jazz, or pop music. If you are unsure of your vocal style, meet with a teacher for a consultation and get some expert advice before choosing a coach.

Tip #2: Consider how involved the coach is within the local music community.
While it is not essential that your vocal coach be well known within your community, this can be an attractive benefit. Working with someone who is involved with the music scene means becoming a student of someone with a network.

Tip #3: Ask the coach about his or her background.
Any coach you choose should have some sort of formal schooling in the musical arts. Ironically, a vocal coach doesn't necessarily need to be a great singer, but he or she should be fully learned in musical theory, practice, history, and techniques.
