Musical Instrument Terms

Wood wind, brass, and string are just a few types of musical instruments. With many types of instruments to play, there are countless supplies and accessories to use along with each. The following are some common terms related to musical instrument, accessories and supplies.

  • Amplifier – An amplifier, or amp, is an electronic device used to project sound. Amps are used most commonly with electric guitars. Some amps can accommodate other equipment, like microphones. Certain amplification devices can be placed in specially designed cases to manipulate the generated sound.
  • Crook – Crooks are accessories used with brass instruments like trumpets and tubas. They are tubes that can be put into or taken out of the body of the instrument to alter its pitch.
  • Pickup – These supplies are found on electric guitars and basses. Pickups are the devices that sends the strings’ vibrations to the amplifier.
  • Plectrum – A plectrum, or pick, is used to pluck instruments’ strings. Picks are used for acoustic as well as electric instruments. Picks can be made from a variety of materials and are also available in different thicknesses, though they are all still relatively thin.
  • Reed – Reeds are thin strips that vibrate to create sound. Reeds are necessary supplies in woodwind instruments like clarinets and oboes, though they are also found in instruments like organs and accordions. Reeds can be made from a variety of materials.
  • Tablature – Tablature is an alternative to traditional sheet music. For acoustic or electric guitars, tablature breaks down each note of a piece into the fret and string needed to create it. A music stand is highly recommended to make reading your tablature easier.
  • Whammy Bar – Whammy bars, sometimes called tremolo bars, are found on electric guitars. They can be manipulated to bend the pitch of a note or a chord.

Musical instruments, supplies, and accessories are sold through various distributors and dealers all over the world. Many professionals supply this equipment to public schools, musicians, and individuals that appreciate playing the drums, a guitar, or a piano at home. As you may know, musical instruments have been around for many centuries now, and continue to advance. Some of the more common items and accessories sold in music product stores are equipment stands, cleaning tools, violin cases, piano tuners, guitar picks and amplifiers. The music market is a very large one these days, which involves a grand array of high-end, cheap, and even used equipment. Some instruments and accessories that many musicians acquire from music stores and shops are replacement guitar strings, mouthpieces for flutes and saxophones, percussion equipment like drums and cymbals, as well as acoustic guitars. While one individual may need an electric guitar for his or her band, another may need a microphone and stand for singing on a stage. Some other instruments and accessories that these stores supply are bass guitars, straps for large drums used in school bands, piano pedals, drum sticks, cleaning kits and even new drum sets. Depending on where it is you live, it is likely that there is a music instrument and accessories distributor or shop in your area. You can get in touch with them or visit their store in order to learn more about available equipment, electric guitars, replacement mouthpieces, percussion instruments, or cymbal sets. Ask all questions that pertain to your interests and needs.
