Musician's Popular Terms

The range of musicians is as far reaching as the very music they play. From jazz to acapella to rock, musicians abound in all facets of life, such as movies and TV, clubs, high school glee clubs, and even barbershop quartets. Many musicians pride themselves on writing their own lyrics to songs that inspire them, while others are members of a band and play bass for instance. There are some popular definitions you can consider when hiring music professionals and bands for your next event, whether you want a group complete with bass guitarist and keyboardist members, or a popular singer with a record label.

  • Percussion instrument – From the Latin “percussio,” this type of instrument makes a sound when struck or shaken, causing a vibration that translates to sound. Examples of percussion instruments include cymbals, marimba and xylophone.
  • Conductor – One who directs a music ensemble using visible gestures, such as to an orchestra. These professionals shape the sounds of the group through tempo setting, performer unity, and execution of beats and preparations.
  • Musical notation – A system of writing music through written symbols on a staff, such as dots and ties, featuring varying note values. Musicians read notes from left to right, as if reading a book. The key of each piece of music is determined by the key signature, such as A sharp.
  • Recording artist – A musician who records music on a record label for sale to the public.
  • Composer – One who creates music for performance or interpretation, by oral methods or through musical notation, usually for classical music. In popular music, creators of music are called song writers.
