Common Neurology Terms

Physicians who specialize in neurology complete a few years of additional education after medical school to become experts in their field. Below are seven common words to be familiar with when using a neurologist.

  • Neurology – A branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the brain and nervous system. Physicians that specialize in neurology are called neurologists. Neurologists diagnose and treat genetic disorders and infectious diseases that affect the nervous system.
  • Radiology – A department of medicine that uses imaging to help doctors diagnose problems within the human body. Neurologists use radiology tests like CT scans, PET scans, and MRI scans to diagnose patients.
  • Dermatology – A branch of medicine that deals with diagnosing and treating skin conditions. A doctor that has studied dermatology addresses skin problems, from acne to skin cancer. Some neurological disorders can cause dermatological symptoms.
  • Dementia – A severe loss of cognitive function resulting in impaired attention, memory, complex reasoning skills, and language skills. Dementia typically affects older people but can have an early onset.
  • Epilepsy – A neurological disorder that causes recurrent seizures. There is no cure for epilepsy but it can be controlled with medication or surgery.
  • ALS – A neurological disease, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, that results in the degeneration of neurons in the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. ALS is characterized by symptoms like muscle weakness and twitching.
  • Multiple Sclerosis – A disorder that causes a person’s immune system to attack nervous system cells, interfering with communication between brain cells. Multiple sclerosis has a wide variety of possible symptoms, which can make it difficult to diagnose.

Neurology is the field of medicine that deals with the nervous system. There are many diseases and disorders that neurologists must diagnose and treat as part of their practice. A physician in this type of medical practice will treat patients who suffer from dementia and Parkinson's disease. Lou Gehrig's Disease and ALS also affect the nervous system. Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive autoimmune disease that also affects the CNS. A patient suffering from a stroke or a seizure due to epilepsy will require the care of a doctor of neurology. An Ekg or MRI are two types of scanning procedures that help physicians pinpoint problems in the brain. These can be the result of a tumor. Radiology helps neurologist determine the cause of disease. This form of treatment seeks to interpret images of the body. It can be used in conjunction with cardiology or dermatology as well as oncology. Any damage to the nerves will require a doctors care. There can be a number of reasons for this type of condition. Genetics can play a role. A serious accident may cause trauma and injury to the body and affect the nervous system. Depending on the severity of the injury or disease, these types of afflictions may require a stay in the hospital. A specialist in internal medicine will be able to recommend a course of treatment which can be discussed with family members. A specialist in dermatology or radiology may also be consulted. Patients suffering from dementia will also require clinical treatment.
