Types of Gifts in Souvenir Stores

Most people on vacation take time to visit a souvenir shop. This is a retail store which supplies tourists with different items such as shirts and mugs. Such stores carry inexpensive gifts to take home to loved ones who were unable to go on the trip. There are three types of products sold in these shops: novelty items, souvenirs, and trinkets. While the lines between these three categories can overlap one another, below is an individual description of each.

  • Novelty – Inexpensive merchandise that has no real purpose except to entertain. Many items thrown into this category are either made for adults or to be comical. Common presents include birthday cards featuring revealing images or “over the hill” jokes. A novelty gift is often used to inspire laughter in an otherwise serious event such as a wedding shower.

  • Souvenir – This is the French word for “to remember,” “memory,” or “memento”. These goods are created to keep as a token of a trip the owner has taken. Famous landmarks and local photos are often used. Typical souvenirs are snow globes, postcards, and key chains. While they have no monetary value, the owners often keep them for years because of their emotional significance.

  • Trinket – A small object that has no real value in the traditional sense of the word. The importance of the item lies within the memory of the owner. An example of a present that would be considered a trinket would be a seashell necklace or a box made out of a turtle shell. These goods are made cheaply because they have low retail prices. They are manufactured in such as a way as to maximize supplies while limiting costs.

A novelty retail store will offer many small and unusual trinkets. If you’re going on a vacation and would like to buy a present for friends or family that stayed home, a novelty gift is a common choice. It could be a mug, hat, shirt or another form of clothing. Usually these supplies are adorned with a logo or symbol related to the area in which you were vacationing or visiting. It can also be used as your own souvenir to commemorate a business trip or special occasion. Some people enjoy collecting souvenirs from these particular occasions. Novelty stores generally have supplies for a children’s birthday party. They may have cheaply priced toys or teddy bears. There are funny gag gifts for adult birthdays for hitting milestone ages. Presents can be found for romantic occasions as well. They may have chocolates, jewelry or a well-written card. You can also buy smaller items and trinkets such as buttons or socks. Some shops may have antique items for sale as well. Retail novelty stores can be found at the mall or in other local hot spots around your town. An online search can be done if you are looking for a nearby shop or if there is a particular item you need to find. Last minute shopping for Christmas or birthdays can be done at a novelty shop. No matter who you are looking to purchase a present or gift for, there is a high possibility of finding something significant for the right occasion.
