A nursery is a location where numerous types of plants are grown and kept in stock until they are ready to be sold. These plants are often used for decorative purposes inside or outside a home. For example, someone can buy a small tree at a nursery and then plant it in his or her yard. The nursery will have greenhouse where individuals can look at the different plants in stock. While trees and shrubs can be used in a backyard, flowers can be purchased for decoration around a home. Both the general public and landscaping professionals will buy plants from a nursery dealer.
Annuals - Annuals are plants that have a growth cycle that only last one year.
Biennial - Biennials are a plant or flower that will live for two years.
Acid Soil - Acid soils are measured with a pH lower than seven. When the number is lower, it means that a higher amount of acid is in the soil.
Alkaline Soil - Alkaline soil has a pH level that is higher than seven.
Mulch - Mulch is a material that is placed over soil and is designed to control weeds and promote moisture. Mulch is made of organic matter, including items like bark and leaves.
Horticulture - Horticulture is the art and science of growing and maintaining flowers and ornamental plants.
Greenhouses - Greenhouses are buildings that are constructed exclusively to grow plants and feature an ideal climate and sunlight so plants can thrive. While greenhouses are commonly used by commercial plant dealers, passionate gardeners may also have one located on their property.
Nursery stock dealers sell trees and other plants. More specifically, they sell plants that they or other growers have allowed to grow to a certain size. Thus, they allow gardeners to skip the seed stage and purchase a shrub or flower that is already looking good and ready to plant. This is particularly important when extensive landscape design has been done.
Nursery stock dealers may also sell plants wholesale to garden centers. If they also act as growers, they grow plants in large quantities, both outside and in greenhouses. Some may specialize in specific areas, such as greenhouse production or trees. They may also supply large-scale purchasers such as parks services.
In addition to wholesale, many dealers will sell plants retail and even online. Individuals can go to a dealer to buy plants for their backyard. Some nursery stock dealers also work with specific landscape designers to cater to customers who wish to buy an entire garden, with all of the work done for them.
They may offer advice on soil care, plant nutrients and other aspects of horticulture. However, their primary purpose is to supply plants to anyone who might need them and to handle the difficult and risky early growth stages.
While some nursery stock dealers grow their own plants, most work with growers and farmers and act as brokers, helping the growers get their plants to purchasers and into garden centers. Garden centers themselves may act as nursery stock dealers and as growers, at least on a smaller scale. It is worth noting that potted house plants are generally not considered to be nursery stock.
