Nurses
Nurses are often the face of healthcare. They register patients, prep them for surgery, care for them in the hospital, and assist doctors in their tasks. With a gentle bedside manner, a must in this profession, male and female nurses can work within a private physician's practice, within a hospital, medical center, or clinic. Registered nurses (RNs) are graduate trained nurses who have passed the state registration exam and who have obtained a license to practice nursing. They may work with the sick or disabled, or they may work in an operating room setting, for example. Some are involved in pediatrics, while others work in the maternity department. Still others assist those in retirement and the elderly, and are on staff at senior centers and nursing homes. Likewise, most schools have nurses on site to provide care for students on a daily basis. From emergency rooms to fertility clinics, licensed and registered nurses are an integral part of the healthcare system. Often thought of as the backbone of hospitals, nursing homes, and private practices, these care givers often are the friendly face that patients encounter first in their experience. Although they don't necessarily have the expertise of doctors who have gone through medical school, nurses and nurse practitioners are the ones patients interact with the most. Up until the 19th century, nursing was not thought of as a reputable profession. Many women who became nurses were from the lower class, with people feeling that nursing was not a legitimate career choice. Then in the late 1800s, Florence Nightingale came along and helped to shape our modern nursing profession. Today, nursing schools, colleges, and universities offer day and night programs for men and women to obtain their degree and become licensed nurses and nurse practitioners in the medical field.

Degreed nurses are important to have in order to assist doctors and medical practitioners in clinics, hospitals, on home visits. A nurse has had to obtain a degree giving him or her proper credentials in order to do their job. Nurses will generally specialize in a certain area, some will start working in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, while others will work in clinics for a wide range of patients. Patients in retirement may have the option of staying at home and having a nurse visit them to perform certain health procedures. Private Nurses can cost a lot of money for their services, but they can be very helpful in numerous ways. If you want to find a nursed for an elderly family member, many RN's are available for home visits to help those that are retired, sick, and need help with their health care. A nurse, who is an assistant to the physician, will perform tests and check your vitals when going in for a general check up with a doctor. They can also help answer some questions you may have. Nurses will supply patients with information they require for their illness and can give techniques on how to treat different ailments. Nursing centers in hospitals will usually have various nurses on staff throughout the day and night to help the patients when the doctor is not on site. If you are planning a hospital visit the type of attention the nurses give the patients may help decide what hospital you want to go to. You can do research on various hospitals about their medical practitioners and the nurses they have on staff. You will be taken care of by the RNs more than your doctor, so feeling comfortable with them is important when in the hospital. Doctor assistants will practice different treatments with patients, and should always help patients in a professional manner.
