Common Oil Field Service and Equipment Terminology
It won't surprise anyone to find out that drilling for petroleum is a complicated job that involves a lot of specialized equipment to keep the drills, pumping equipment and gas rigs in good working order. If you're looking for work on an offshore oil rig, onshore refinery or oil field, here are some basic terms you should be familiar with.
Casing - Any pipe that's used to like the bore hole of an oil or gas well.
Christmas Tree - The collected valves, pumps and other machinery found on the top of a well head are referred to as Christmas trees because they're lit up at night to prevent collisions with low flying aircraft.
Drilling Rig - The collection of parts and equipment used for drilling and pumping oil out of a well head. A drilling rig is a machine that creates holes or shafts in the ground.
Offshore Oil Rig - These man-made structures that are used for pulling petroleum and natural gas from deep below the ocean's surface. A wellbore is drilled through the seabed. Workers on these rigs are well paid, but are generally expected to work shifts that may keep them away from their families for weeks at a time.
Wellbore - A hole that's drilled in the ocean or an oil field to find oil or natural gas. It is drilled specifically for excavation or extraction of naturally occurring minerals and resources like water, oil or gas.
Wellhead - A wellhead is a term that applies to the collection of equipment that's placed at the top of a well bore.
If you have ever seen an oilfield, then you know that a lot of different types of equipment like rigs, pumps, pressure trucks, and other machinery are used in the drilling process. If a company owns a large oilfield, then they typically purchase their equipment from specialized distributors because they can give discounts on their large orders. You can find several oil field equipment dealers listed in your online directory and on the internet. By following these guidelines, you should be able to find a company that can give you all of the industrial equipment that you need. First, you will want to determine how much experience the company has. You can do this by asking them how long they have been in business. Those with several years of experience should have more pumping and safety equipment for sale. Ask them if they have a catalog so that you can look at the selection of equipment including rigs, pumps, jacks or platforms, land units, and safety gear that you need for drilling processes. Not all hot oil drilling is the same, so be sure that they have the products you seek. Find out what manufacturer makes the products so that you can determine durability. While making sure that you get all of the needed products, you should also consider cost. Ask them for price quotes so that you can compare their discounts and choose one offering good products, at cheap prices.
