Long before wearing monocles or scissor glasses became available to the optically challenged, civilizations have looked for ways to improve their eye sight. Efforts at magnification are recorded as far back as ancient Egyptian civilization. Fortunately for us, today's optical goods have all the benefits of modern science and technology behind them. Optometry today makes better vision possible for millions. Many circumstances may send a person to the optometrist. A doctor, teacher, or other care giver may notice a persons need for an exam. Or, the individual himself may experience headaches, reduced vision while driving, or difficulty reading small print. Opticians perform a variety of tests designed to evaluate eye health. They then write prescriptions for glasses or contacts that have the appropriate lens strength to meet the needs of the consumer. Some patients only need glasses for reading purposes. Others who need to wear glasses all the time may choose between bifocals and progressive lens options. Some versions are designed with transition lenses that offer protective coatings against the sun. Contact wearers can choose between disposable and reusable versions. They may even choose to alter their eye color based on the latest fashions. Designer frames are an important part of the optical goods market. Consumers are willing to make a large investment in an accessory that they will wear on a frequent basis. Retail eye wear stores and optometrists offices typically carry a line of frames. These can sometimes be found more cheaply by shopping around a larger discount outlets.
