Outboard Motor Terms to Know

Outboard motors are used on boats to propel them through the water. They can range from the large motors found on motorboats to the smaller ones used on sailboats. It is a very expensive mechanical part, but a customer can often find used motors for sale that are still in working condition. Before buying a used motor for sale, however, it is important to understand the basics of outboard motors and how they work. Some popular terms are listed below.

  • Transom – A metal piece at the back of the boat where the outboard motor is bolted on. The transom piece should be strong enough to hold the engine without any signs of rust.
  • Two Stroke – An internal combustible engine that is very powerful. It is operated using a lever that moves up and down. Most outboard motors are 2 stroke engines, though there are some that are four stroke engines.
  • Powerhead – The upper part of the outboard motor that houses the engine. It also houses the tiller, if the engine has one. For motors with large engines, the powerhead must be large enough to house them.
  • Midsection – The middle of an outboard motor that houses the exhaust. It is also where the mounting bracket is placed. The size of the bracket will vary depending on the size of the motor.
  • Lower Unit – The bottom part of an outboard motor that houses the gearbox and the propeller, as well as the water intake valve.
  • Propeller – A machine made out of the flat blades that spins rapidly when the motor is turned on, This is what moves the boat through the water. Ocean going vessels have larger propellers.

Outboard motors are most commonly used to propel various types of watercraft such as fishing boats. The engine options include those that use electricity, gasoline, or diesel as fuel. Some models have been designed for fishing in small lakes while others are reliable enough for exploring the ocean for the world’s best deep sea fishing locations. When purchasing an outboard motor for your boat, you will want to compare the options available to you. This will help ensure that you select a model that meets your needs and does not exceed your budget. You can start by contacting the dealers in your area to find out what types of outboard motors they sell. Some of the dealers will focus on small engines for fishing boats while some will focus on sport boat models. Many of the dealers you contact will have a range of new and used options to consider. Ask the dealers to give you information about their propellers, engines, and rudders. The propellers spin to push the vessel forward or backward. The rudder offers steering control so that you can direct the watercraft. Be sure to ask about the different electric and gas engines that you might choose. Depending on your needs, you might be able to save money in the long run by choosing a used electric model. Some dealers will also have repair parts and accessories for sale. Buying these parts can help you save money by avoiding the high cost of replacing your outboard motor or hiring a repair professional.
