Outboard Motors Repairing Terms to Know

Outboard motors are a popular type of motor for many boats. Like all machines, they need regular maintenance, and occasional repairs. Motors may also need to be winterized for colder months. Getting a motor fixed can be easier with knowledge of different parts and common terms related to outboard motors.

  • Power Head - This term refers to the engine. This is the top part of the motor. This is where the ignition is typically found as well.
  • Midsection - The part of the motor with the exhaust housing. This runs between the engine and the lowest portion of the motor.
  • Lower Unit - Also called the gearbox. The bottommost portion of the motor.
  • Throttle - The mechanism for adjusting the power of the motor, and thus the speed. It is a part of the engine.
  • Mounting Bracket - The component which allows the motor to attach to a boat. This is located at the top of the midsection of the motor.
  • Water Intake - The component which brings in water to help cool the engine. It is located in the lower unit. If the motor is used when the water intake is not properly submerged, the engine may overheat and require major repairs.
  • Skeg - The bottommost part of the entire motor. It can also serve as a rudder when the ignition is not engaged, and fix the direction of the boat.
  • Propeller - The component which moves to drive the boat forward. The propeller can become damaged if it gets caught in seaweed or other plant life. They can also be damaged by the implosion of trapped air pockets.

Outboard motors are used to propel boats. Over time, the various parts of outboard motors can fail. As these products are expensive to purchase, many people choose to hire a professional to rebuild or repair a broken engine. This allows them to avoid the high cost of purchasing new gear for their boats. When hiring an outboard motor repair professional, you will want to make sure to choose someone experienced with the type of engine, propeller, and ignition that you have. Someone experienced with these parts is more likely to know how to fix malfunctioning parts than someone who has never worked with them before. You will also want to find out whether certain repair professionals in your area have connections to part suppliers. Someone with access to a supplier can often purchase new and used parts at cheap prices. Having access to manual gear boxes, brackets, trailer hitches, and other repair parts makes it easier for them to fix ignitions, propellers, and small engines affordably. Many outboard motor engine repair professional can winterize boats as well. This helps protect the boat from damage during the winter, when it is typically not in use. You might also want to ask the service professionals whether they have any gear for sale. That way you can purchase inflatable rafts, brackets, propellers, and other items that you might need in the future. Since you want to get the best services at the cheapest prices, ask the repair professionals to give you price quotes. If you are a member of a boating club, ask them whether you qualify for any discounts.
