Medical Oxygen FAQs
If you have been prescribed medical oxygen by your doctor, you may have some questions about how and why you will be using this treatment. The following frequently asked questions will help you better understand oxygen therapy:

Why have I been prescribed oxygen therapy?
There are any number of medical conditions that may lead a doctor or specialist to prescribe you oxygen therapy. Generally, your ailment has lead to difficulty breathing or lung or heart problems. If your heart has been weakened by heart disease, it may not be able to pump oxygen around your body as effectively as it should. Your oxygen therapy should relieve symptoms such as fatigue, decreased stamina and strength, memory loss, confusion, and difficulty breathing.

How does oxygen therapy work?
When you use oxygen therapy, you will receive several pieces of equipment that will help you with the process. First, oxygen is delivered usually as either compressed gas or liquid gas. In both instances, you are usually given a large cylinder or can which you then use to fill smaller, portable units. You then wear tubing that attaches to your nostrils in order to breathe in the oxygen. If you have a cold or need a greater amount of oxygen intake, a mask can be used, which fits over your nose and mouth.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is when you are in a sealed vessel or container where you can breath pure oxygen gas that has been pressurized. It is performed at a hospital or clinic and is used for more acute problems such as decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and major burns.

Oxygen manufacturers will sell the different equipment that is needed. Canisters, chambers, masks, bottles, tubes, and pumps are just a few of the items you may be looking to buy. Sellers will have liquid O2 for sale, as well as concentrators, dispensers, and refurbished containers. If you have to follow oxygen therapy you will want to find distributors that have cheap products or that give discounts throughout the year to help those that are in constant need of the equipment. However, you will want to find the products that give you the right mix of oxygen so it does not harm you. Research the different brands and see which products are known to work better, have fewer problems, and last longer. Many instruments are available as refurbished models which can work just as well as those you would pay the entire price for. Of course, finding a sale on portable oxygen equipment is a great way to save money on something that makes your life easier. Suppliers with air products, including tanks and liquid O2 can be found by looking online or in a local phone book. Some will have retail stores while others that offer discount prices will send you a catalogue and have you order by mail, online, or by phone. Sellers of air products can sometimes work with health insurance companies to help reduce the out of pocket expenses you're expected to cover. Your health insurance may be able to help you find a company that has decent prices on their product so even if your plan doesn't cover the cost they will still help you save money.
