Packaging Supply Terms

If you have ever had to move an entire household, you know the value of good, sturdy packaging and packing supplies. Packing supplies are used for more than moving. For example, plastic cartons are a good way to store seasonal items or equipment that is seldom used or for gift wrapping a package that needs to be shipped. Below are some popular terms used for packing supplies.

  • Cellophane - A protective film that is often used for wrapping items or boxes. Cellophane protects the contents of a package from outside dangers, such as water damage or bacteria. It is commonly used in transporting food products to help keep them fresh.
  • Bubble Wrap – A type of cellophane that is used inside of a container or cardboard box to protect the items inside. Bubble wrap is a sheet of cellophane with hundreds of air pockets. It is usually used to wrap delicate items, such as glass, china or other breakables that could get broken during shipping.
  • Packing Containers – Durable containers and cartons for storing or transferring items. For example, moving boxes are commonly made out of cardboard. The cardboard boxes come in different sizes and are reasonably sturdy. While they can also be used for storing items, they can be damaged over time. This is why plastic containers and cartons are often used for long term storage use. While they can be more expensive, the plastic container will last longer.
  • Dolly – A piece of moving equipment that has wheels on the bottom and a support bar along the back. Dollies are used when moving heavy items, like large appliances. They can often be rented from packing stores.

When looking for the best deals on packaging supplies and equipment, take the time to do a bit of research. Look online for stores near you that sell packaging supplies, like tape, cardboard boxes, and shrink and stretch wrap dispensers. Compare prices at the various stores you found online and read reviews, if they're available. The yellow pages is also a good source for packaging supplies and equipment. After you have made a short list of companies in your area from the internet and the yellow pages, start calling them to ask any questions about particular products you are interested in. Maybe you are shipping a mass amount of fragile items, like custom artwork for example, and finding some quality packing material, including foam peanuts or inflated bags is the solution you think would work best. Ask them if they have different types of packing materials like this, and their suggestions as to other possible solutions. Or, maybe you are looking to ship a bunch of towels, clothes, or stuffed animals; in this case, you should consider getting a vacuum machine. These machines suck the air out of the bags your items are in, and then seals them in their shrunken state, providing more room in the container for additional contents. If you are a business, then you can get packaging supplies and equipment at wholesale prices. Wholesale products are only available to companies, not individuals. After you have narrowed down your list, go the store that fits the bill the closest, and purchase the supplies you need to make sure your belongings are as secure as possible. A quality packaged item is a safe item; this is especially useful to remember if moving or shipping a gift.
