Every year more than forty million Americans relocate, often for reasons related to work. If you’re planning a move or need to ship an item, there are many service providers and suppliers that can help you pack up and arrange transport. Here are a few terms to become familiar with in this industry.
Cargo — Refers to the freight carried by a transport provider, whether on a vessel, train, truck, or airplane.
Crate— A box in which large or heavy items are transported, often made of wood but can be made of plastic or other strong material. However, companies that offer moving services for household goods often don’t use crates but instead box items in cardboard.
Freight Forwarder — A company, often associated with international transport, that provides logistic services including arranging to ship goods, store them temporarily as required, track the delivery date, and prepare all required documentation. Also may offer to pack items, which should include using bubble wrap to protect fragile items.
Less-than-Container — When the cargo being transported does not fill an entire container. Often another customer’s goods will be included to complete the load.
Tariff — If you are moving to an international destination, there may be an export or import tax, also called a tariff. Your forwarder can advise if this is the case.
Dunnage — Refers to material used as padding to protect fragile items during a move.
Pallet — A low-lying structure, usually made of wood, that supports and stabilizes large items during transport.
Logistic services — Managing the movement of goods domestically or internationally, including arranging transport, tracking, temporary storage, and ensuring delivery.
