According to the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, chronic pain affects more people than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. Here is a glossary of pain management terms.

  • Analgesics – These medications control pain and provide relief. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin are available over-the-counter. A doctor can prescribe COX-2 inhibitors and narcotic drug treatment.

  • Chronic pain – Chronic pain recurs over an extended time period, often in spite of treatment. It can occur because of such conditions as arthritis and sciatica. Analgesic medications provide relief. You can also find a center that specializes in acupuncture, physical therapy or chiropractic therapy to manage your pain.
  • Knee injury – The knee is the largest joint in the body, and many people have chronic knee pain. This pain can happen because of a fracture, ligament tear or sprain. Overuse and obesity can result in inflammation and pain.
  • Neuralgia – Neuralgia, or nerve damage, can cause numbness, muscle weakness, constant burning pain and intermittent sharp pain. Neuralgia usually affects a specific part of the body, such as your face, neck or hip. The nerve disorder sciatica causes pain to run down the leg and foot.
