Paint Retail Terms to Know

Painting seems like an easy project, but whether you're just changing your wall's color or looking for a whole new décor, it is important to do research. There is more to painting than just buying a can - consider the type of brush you're using, whether you want oil or spray. Even the shade of color makes a difference. You can give your house's interior or exterior a whole new look, and the following definitions can help.

  • Acrylic - Also called latex, this is a versatile, non-toxic paint that dries quickly. It is great on walls and is typically brushed on.
  • Oil - A more difficult paint to use. Oil dries slowly but can last longer once applied.
  • Epoxy - A tough coating that can stick on concrete and ensure durability. Stores gear epoxy for use on floors, often in garages.
  • Primer - The best way to prepare your surface, whether it be a spraypaint job or use with a brush, is to lay down a layer of primer. Think of primer as a go-between that helps the paint adhere to the surface. Most paint stores will sell primer and recommend you use it for many jobs.
  • Stain - When used in the context of home improvement, stains are generally used on wood when you want to give it a different color without covering up the natural grain of the wood. Stains are semi-transparent for this purpose. The wood's contours remain visible as the wood takes on the color of the stain. Some stains can cover up the grain almost completely.
  • Paint contractor - For a large difficult job, consider hiring a professional. Some can help you with everything from choosing your color palette to performing the actual job.

Consumers looking to spruce up their rooms with a nice coat of paint may head to a retail paint shop or home improvement store. Retail paint shops may sell specialty paint for autos, for example. Many times, associates are on hand to give the consumer advice on color matching, brand comparisons, custom services, and price outlines. Contractors are often seen at retail paint shops, as they need to stock up on exterior and interior house paint for their commercial, industrial, and residential jobs. They may need some brushes, drop cloths, and other supply items that are needed to work with paint. When residents of a home or owners of a business are looking for the perfect color for their walls, they may need a bit of help. This is where color chips and cards come in. Interior decorators are also usual customers of retail paint shops. They are hired by clients to improve a room's décor, ensuring a put-together look and finish. Paint shops may sell anything from primer and tint to wood stain and non toxic paint. There are many different kinds, from matte and gloss, to washable and spray. Automotive spray paint is a sub specialty of some shops. Manufacturers sell their products to wholesale and retail providers, who in turn sell to the public. Since a coat of paint can freshen up any room, this is an easy, relatively inexpensive way to renovate your décor. Consumers can find paint of all kinds by heading to their nearest hardware, home improvement, or specialty paint store. They can also check out listings online, along with project ideas and color suggestions. For those who just can't find the right color, many stores offer custom paint mixes to get an exact match for your needs.
