Parachute Jumping Instruction Terminology

Thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies enjoy the excitement of sky diving, tandem jumping, and bungee jumping. For beginners who want to try parachute jumping, they should consider lessons or an instructional course. Some lessons are even given indoors. After all, the right equipment makes is possible to simulate a sky dive or parachute jump. However, there are many safety precautions that must be taken before free falling, bungee jumping, or parachuting from a plane or helicopter. Take a look at the key terms found below in order to broaden your understanding of parachute jumping and sky dive instruction lessons.

  • Drop Zone – This is a designated area for parachuting or landing. Military troops use drop zones for parachute jumping, and skydivers land in these areas when jumping from planes or helicopters. Supplies are also sometimes dropped in these zones.
  • Static Line – A cord that is used to open a parachute during a jump. A static line is sometimes used instead of a rip cord. It is attached at one end to the aircraft. This line is pulled open when a jumper is clear of the aircraft.
  • Tandem Jump – Also known as tandem skydiving, this is when a student or individual taking skydiving lessons is attached to an instructor via a harness. This allows the instructor to guide the student through the parachuting process.
  • Free Fall – A common term used in parachute jumping, skydiving, and bungee jumping. It essentially refers to when a person is simply falling with the force of gravity. Nothing else is being used when free falling.
  • Altimeter – An instrument or device that is often used by skydivers and parachute jumpers. It determines altitude that is attained, and essentially works like a radar or barometric device that is found in an airplane.

People who are interested in parachuting as a recreational activity should seek a school that offers the training courses that they need to develop proper techniques and understand the safety concerns. Finding a school that has experienced teachers can greatly increase the safety of this sport. When you call a parachute jumping instruction school, you should ask them what types of lessons they offer. Some of the schools will begin your training with static-line jumping. Static-line gives you the opportunity to practice your jumping skills without skydiving from an airplane or helicopter. After getting this training, many schools will give you the extreme sport training that you need through tandem instruction. This means that you will learn by jumping out of a plane or helicopter while attached to an instructor who can pull the chord and put you safely in the drop zone if you cannot do it yourself. After you have gotten some experience, you can get the extreme thrill of free-fall and swooping in the air on your own. Ask the parachute jumping school how long their instructors have been teaching people to jump out of planes and land safely with a parachute. If the instructors have taught students for several years, then they should have the training that they need to teach you too. Ask the school what types of courses they offer. Choose one that you think will prepare you best. You should also ask them what their rates are so you can decide if their lessons are affordable.
