Frequently Asked Questions about Parachutes
These frequently asked questions should help you decide what types of parachutes and parachuting lessons are right for you:

How Do People Learn to Parachute Safely?
Most people learn to parachute by taking tandem lessons. This allows the beginner to parachute while attached to an instructor. Other skydiving schools train beginners how to operate the parachute on the ground. After concluding the lessons on the ground, the beginner parachutes with the instructor, but not attached to the instructor.

What Happens if the Parachute Doesn't Open?
On rare occasions, a malfunction could prevent a parachute from opening when its cord is pulled. That's why most skydiving schools insist that students use an emergency parachute. This allows the skydiver to land safely. The chances that neither parachute will open is extremely small.

How Far and Fast do Skydivers Fall?
Skydivers typically jump from a height between 12,500 and 14,500 AGL (above ground level). From this height, skydivers can reach about 115 mph during freefall. The freefall, however, only lasts about one minute before the skydiver enters the pull zone. This is the point where the skydivers needs to pull his or her cord to release the parachute safely and allow enough time to slow down before landing.

How Old Does Someone Have to be to Skydive?
No government regulations say that someone must reach a certain age to skydive. Still, most parachuting schools only let people dive when they are 18 or older. Pilots who own their own planes, of course, can plan skydiving events for people of all ages, but they might be held liable for injuries that occur through negligence.

A parachute is an apparatus deigned to slow a free fall from an airplane, usually consisting of a large nylon canopy as well as cord, vest, and harness. Some people use parachutes for fun, jumping out of airplanes after paying a fee for this thrilling experience. Other parachutes are designed not for entertainment, but for emergency. Emergency parachutes are needed in case an aircraft breaks down and a crash is imminent. When people are in the market for a new parachute, they often visit parachute dealers and stores to purchase their products. Such parachute shops may sell training gear, goggles, emergency parachutes, equipment and supplies, custom items, packing gear, rigging, canopies, jumpsuits, gliders, tech devices, safety gear, helmets, and caps. You can also get expert advice from staff members on anything from safe deployment to nylon canopy choice. Go online to research parachutes and what they entail. Find out where to take classes from certified crew members, as well as local listings of parachute dealers. Whether you plan to parachute for recreation, or whether you're in need of an emergency chute for your plane, you can't go wrong with a parachute dealer or shop to buy your products from. Consider your budget and needs, whether you need training manuals, safety gear, custom parachutes and gliders, or jumpsuits, and target your search for a company accordingly. Before purchasing a parachute or related equipment, do your research on buying tips, financing, dealers in your area, used and pre-owned prices, new prices, trades, and lease vs. buy information. Choose a parachute company that offers the type of gear you need, such as helmets, safety gear, and rigging. You also want the best sales and deals as well, so shop around. Look in circulars, online catalogs, and online auction sites as well.
