Important Terms to Know About Patio Construction

During times of good weather, a well-constructed patio is used as often as any room in a house. Patios are ideal for entertaining, family dinners and relaxing with the people you love while enjoying the outdoors. A patio could be just the outdoor sanctuary you are looking for. If you are considering building a patio here are some terms you may come across.

  • Concrete – One of the more popular patio construction materials is concrete. Concrete is versatile, durable and can be stained and stamped to get the aesthetic design you want.
  • Pavers – Pavers are similar to brick but are available in all different colors and designs. Pavers are assembled like a puzzle to create the deck, patio or path you want in your backyard.
  • Flagstone – Flagstone refers to the use of natural rocks used to build a deck, patio or pathway. Commonly used stones are Pennsylvania bluestone and Montana slate which are quarried around the country and available at your local patio construction store.
  • Cover – Adding a cover to shade or protect your patio from rain or wind can extend the amount of time you can spend enjoying your backyard. Covers are available in all different shapes, sizes and materials. Some covers are permanent structures while others are simply awnings attached to your roof which are mechanically or manually opened at closed before and after use.
  • Drainage – Your new patio or deck will require a way and place to drain excess rain water to ensure that the water doesn’t build up in the seams of your patio and cause damage. Sealants can also help keep your patio rainproof.

On a nice warm day or evening, grilling on the patio can't be beat. That's why so many people and even restaurant owners decide to hire a patio contractor to build one of these. Large or small, a patio can provide a place to enjoy the sun, a cold drink or two, or just watch the scenery. Patio builders are contractors who build patios for residential or commercial purposes. They may also construct decks, walls, walkways, fences, and gazebos. Patios are usually located in back yards, but they can also be located in front yards. Many restaurants and cafés feature outdoor seating areas where patrons can dine while enjoying the mild weather. Surfaces can be made of materials like brick, concrete slabs, tile, wood, or stone. Some are decorative in nature, with elaborate designs and colorful features. Others are standard concrete slabs with more of a functional feel. Landscapers may provide patio building as part of their offerings, if they have a background in construction. General contractors can provide patio construction, often sub contracting out for specialty workers, such as paving contractors, who know their way around a great patio design. When faced with a remodel or renovation, many home and business owners opt to put in a patio, to complement a pool area with steps, deck, gazebo, and garden. Handy home owners can make their own patio with a little know-how and the right materials. Home improvement stores have all the materials, tools, and supplies needed to begin your own patio project. The Internet and your local library both have great resources when it comes to building all sorts of patios. Large commercial patios will require experienced paving or patio contractors, so check out listings online of local companies.
