Pavement Marking Terms

You have many options regarding pavement markings for streets. Be aware of the various terms you might come across when purchasing these supplies.

  • Removable Marking Tape - A type of tape used for temporary lane markings, as during construction work. The tape securely bonds to pavement but can be removed later.
  • Permanent Marking Tape - A secure tape used for permanent marking of lines and other symbols on highways, streets and other traffic areas.
  • Road Paint - Paint used for marking highway lines and parking lots and often mixed with reflective beads for safe driving at night or during hard to see weather conditions.
  • Thermoplastic - A common method of marking roads, which is cost efficient and long-lasting. Thermoplastic is composed of mixes of plastics and pigments and applied using trucks that heat the material. Glass beads are placed on top of the thermoplastic while it is still hot.
  • Reflective Markers - Also called raised pavement markers, reflective markets help driver see the road during in the dark and in the rain.
  • Bott's Dots - Raised pavement markets that are non reflective. They are often used to alert to the presence of school zones or other speed limit change areas.
  • Rumble Strips - A segment of street designed with troughs or raised areas that create a strong rumbling vibration for a drive. This alerts a driver of that they should not stray out of their lane, or that hazards are coming.
  • Traffic Symbol - A picture, image or representative shape that communicates information to a driver. Railroad crossing, children crossing and arrows are some examples of highway symbols.
  • Off-Highway Signs - Signs used for parking lots, such as reserved parking and no exit signs.

Pavement markings serve a very important function for modern drivers as a reliable communication system. Throughout the nation, on highways, roads, school zones, city streets, and parking lots, pavement markings tell people where to go and what to do when they're driving –– without requiring them to take their eyes off of the road. Think about all of the different symbols and lines that are necessary for you to make safe decisions when you're in your car. This is why there are expert pavement marking companies who upkeep the asphalt and concrete with this important system of colors, patterns, signs, words, and lines. At some point, you might have come across a lane striping machine while driving. Well, there are plenty of other supplies necessary to do a professional job of pavement marking maintenance. The traffic paint itself has to come from somewhere, and it comes in various forms, such as thermoplastic. For parking lots, it is necessary to have ready-made stencils to fill in handicap spaces. Sometimes, paint isn't necessary, because there is only a temporary need for markings. In this case, there is traffic tape that can be laid onto asphalt or concrete for a short while. In other instances, it is important to have raised markings to clearly delineate lanes. For high traffic areas, reflective markings might be helpful night drivers. Having reflective markings is one way in which some money upfront can save more money and lives down the road. There are professional suppliers and businesses that provide all of this needed equipment. They are familiar with the regulations and the rules that drivers must follow and have products and services that comply and meet the needs of cities, counties, and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
