Terms to Know Before Bringing Your Dog or Cat to the Veterinarian

Bringing your pet to the veterinarian can be an intimidating process. Often, these animal health professionals use terminology that we're not familiar with. The next time you take your dog or cat to be groomed or receive basic medical care, consider the following terms. Understanding and communicating well with your pet's doctor will be beneficial for everyone involved.

  • Atopy - This is a generic term for an allergy. Atopy can present itself in the form of dermatitis or congestion. Your vet may suggest you groom your dog or cat with extra care so as not to irritate the condition. You may also be given a prescription if the allergy is more severe.
  • Dysplasia - Some large dog breeds are known for developing a form of dysplasia in the hips. Dysplasia is an abnormal tissue development and can be painful for the animal when sitting and walking.
  • Distemper - In canines, this is a viral disease that can be fatal. Veterinarians and local governments often require a distemper vaccination.
  • Emesis - This is the medical term for vomiting.
  • Gastritis - Any breed of animal can be susceptible to gastritis, from your pet dog to your pet rabbit. This is when the lining of the stomach has become inflamed.
  • Mange - Mange presents itself on the skin of the animal and often results in hair loss. It's caused by a variety of mites.
  • Separation Anxiety - The care of your animal isn't limited to physiology. If you are a dog or cat owner, you may find yourself with a pet that becomes stressed or acts out when separated from its owner. This is separation anxiety and can be handled by employing a expert companion or a dog-sitting professional.

Pet services are professional kennels and shelters that care for cats, dogs, and other pets. Typically, these shops and facilities specialize in pet sitting, in home grooming, and training, as well as small and large toys for animals. Boarding facilities can be used by the owners of animals such as rabbits, birds, dogs, and cats. They often supply animals with any food, water, shelter, bedding, and companionship they require. At this point, there are pet services and facilities located all over America. Many pet owners take their large dog or small cat to kennels when they go on vacation. This way, an expert is providing care for your companion while you travel. Typically, professional kennels and shelters deal with various breeds of dogs and cats. Some facilities even have veterinarians to offer proper health care to the animals. Depending on the store or boarding facility, they may provide transportation home for the pet. Some kennels even offer pet portraits, training, and grooming. Having your animal stay in a boarding or sitting facility can be like an actual hotel for the pet. By utilizing the internet, you can obtain much more data pertaining to pet services, adoption kennels, and dog or cat groomers. The web can supply you with plenty of information that can further assist you with your rare feline, large bird, or littler than usual dog. It is wise to hone in on the specific grooming, boarding, or training services you are looking for to better assist you with getting the information you need.
