Popular Pet Shop Terms

Pet shops are a haven for pets and owners alike. New companions and family additions come in the form of a cuddly cat or darling dog everyday from such places. While there, families and owners can also purchase supplies, food, and special products needed to care for the new addition. Identify popular terms to aid you on your next trip.

  • Cat Box - Box or tray filled with kitty litter that allows a cat or kitten to urinate or defecate. Rabbits or other animals that are trainable may use this box as well.
  • Kitty Litter - Absorbent product made in granular form and used to line the litter box. Some kitty litter products come with a deodorizer in order to block any offensive smells emanating from it.
  • Heartworms - Parasitic roundworm that is spread from host to host through the bite of a mosquito. Heartworms travel easily through the blood vessels of dogs and puppies. Heartworm medication is available over-the-counter in order for canines to receive monthly treatment against such parasites.
  • Aquarium - Transparent tank full of water in which fish and other water creatures are kept as pets. Live plants can also survive in this setting. With the proper supplies and adequate amount of food, sea pets and plant life can thrive in this aquatic home for some time.
  • Kennel - Temporary boarding for dogs. In a pet store setting dogs are usually boarded before and after pet in-house services.
  • Pet Grooming - To bathe, brush, trim, and treat domestic pets. Pet groomers are typically employed in a pet shop and work a set schedule to perform services.

Pet shops sell supplies and sometimes animals. They vary from small mom and pop store fronts to major chains. Dogs and cats are only sometimes sold in pet shops, but there are shops that specialize in accessories for both species. It has recently become less acceptable to sell puppies and kittens retail. Stores do, however, sell accessories such as toys, beds and clothes for animals companions. Boarding kennels and catteries sometimes also have small shops selling accessories. Many pet shops also offer grooming services and some larger stores may have veterinary clinics. Pet stores do often sell pocket pets, birds and fish. Specialist aquarium stores sell fish, especially tropical fish and koi, and also tanks, food and products for placing in aquariums. This often includes plants. Supplies such as food, grooming supplies and bowls are also sold, especially for dogs and cats. Products for dealing with animal health and pest control are also important. Leashes and harnesses represent a major sales area. More and more, stores that deal in supplies for dogs and cats will put customers in touch with rescues or breeders to acquire animals. Some pet shops specialize in exotic animals. These may also supply cages and feed for unusual creatures. Pet food and supplies is often sold wholesale. Wholesalers sell to retailers and also to large scale breeders and kennels. They may donate food and supplies to rescues or shelters. The modern pet store is less a place to buy a pet and more a place to ensure that one's pet gets a better life.
