Pets and Pet Supply Terminology

If you are looking for a new pet and the supplies to go with it, then it may be helpful to learn a bit about the pet supply market before making any purchases. Here are some important terms and definitions to know before buying a dog, fish, or reptile.

  • Purebred - Purebred animals are a species of animal achieved through the process of selective breeding. A purebred animal is often considered a more valuable pet, but it depends on what you are looking for. There are many breeds of dogs, but inbreeding of the animals has created congenital conditions unique to each type. A purebred puppy or cat can be shown and is often much more expensive than a mutt.
  • Reptile - A reptile is any animal that is cold-blooded. This includes pets such as snakes, turtles, and lizards. Reptiles require special care, so be sure to speak with the shop salesman for consultation on essential supplies. These are generally less playful creatures, so they may not require as many toys and exercise gear.
  • Aquarium - An aquarium is a glass tank that is used to house certain pets. Often, they are used for salt or fresh water fish, but can also be used for reptiles and hermit crabs.
  • Exotic Animals - Since exotic animals are not likely native to your area, they will require special food, toys, and housing. You may need to consult with a veterinarian in addition to the pet shop salesman regarding the supplies needed.
  • Vaccinations - For many pets such as a puppy, kitten, or rabbit, shots to protect them from deadly diseases will be required. Some pet stores may offer these at the time of purchase or adoption, but others may not. Check with local animal control services to see which vaccinations are require for your animal.

In order to stay healthy and happy, pets like dogs and cats require proper supplies, food, and equipment. They need to be transported in crates, require beds for sleeping, and dry and wet food is a necessity in their lives. Toys are also nice to play with, and leashes are necessary for dogs, especially feisty ones, to go out for a walk with their owner. Pet supplies stores sell these items to the general public. Products include grooming supplies, carriers, clothing, collars, and blankets. Most pet supplies stores sell items for a range of animals including fish, birds and reptiles. Large parts of these stores are dedicated to popular pet supplies for dogs and cats. Some veterinarian offices and pet adoption agencies sell a limited amount of pet supplies, including vitamins, cages, chew toys, and food. Some pet supplies stores specialize in selling only equipment related to fish. They can outfit a customer with all of the necessary supplies and equipment necessary to maintain an aquarium. From simple fish bowls to hundred-gallon tanks, these stores are your one-stop-shop for all things fish related. They may even offer installation and set-up of your aquarium system services. Pets, domesticated animals that people keep in their homes for protection or companionship, may range from the small, such as a puppy, rabbit, or guinea pig to the large, such as a Great Dane. Some pet shops specialize in exotic animals, including llamas, tigers, zebras, and monkeys. Owners looking for pet care items can head to large pet department stores, malls, specialty boutiques, and even adoption agencies to pick up treats and supplies on sale that they need for their dog, cat, fish, or bird.
