Terms about Photo Restoration and Retouching

Restoring and enhancing photos is a delicate process. Many services are available for professional restoration and retouching. Software packages also allow people to edit photos at home. Knowing key terms can help you determine what type of retouching or restoring your photographs need.

  • Negative - The original photo made by a film camera. These are smaller photographs and allow and are easier for retouching professionals to work with. Negatives are ideal to restore older photos.
  • Print - The copy of a photo made from the negative. Old prints may need to be restored after damage due to aging.
  • Dodging and Burning - Process which lightens or darkens the exposure. This can be done with film or digital photos.
  • Noise - Also called grain, this is the distortion that often comes with photos taken in lower light. Retouching software can minimize noise, creating cleaner, sharper images.
  • Color Corrections - A general term for adjustment to white balance and exposure of a photograph. Tinting and adjusting contrast are also considered types of color corrections.
  • Sepia - A processing technique in which a black and white photo is converted to brown tones, creating a warmer, more aged appearance. This is a popular treatment even for newer photos, and is done by many professional photo services.
  • Enhancement - A general term for retouching photos in a way that flatters the subject. It may involve concealing skin blemishes, softening wrinkles, and even removing skin bulges. Many photographers can assist with photo enhancement upon request. Software easily allows for images to be enhanced. You can also crop, alter the subject and use a plethora of other editing tools to suit your visual goal of the photo. For the restoration of scratches on photos, however, will most likely need to be done by a professional.

Have some old photos that need some rejuvenation? Most people do. So go dust off those old photos of grandma and consider having them restored and retouched. Time and the elements can ravage photos, making them faded or brittle, prone to wear and tear. To restore these valuable keepsakes, take them to a professional skilled in photo restoration and retouching. Professional editing services can provide enhancements, color correction, and repair. Special techniques can be used to brighten up skin tones on the face and body, bring out the natural color of a photo, and fix tears and damaged images. Experts in this field can provide scanning, photo retouching, digital enhancements, airbrushing, and red eye reduction—all through the use of state-of-the-art software and other tools. Whether you want to display your photographs in a traditional album, on film, or on a computer via digital slideshow, it’s possible to get your old photographs looking new again. Revisit the glamour of your past with those old antique slides through restoration and retouching. These fixes all used to be done by hand before the advent of computers and software. Now, corrections and enhancements for pictures are made easy through technology. Customers can choose to submit photos for retouching via the web, in person at a print shop, via email or CD, or through the post office. Some companies also provide camera and printer repair. Color correction and print restoration professionals may boast a virtual or brick and mortar space, each with its own advantages in providing the customer with a quality experience, whether through an ongoing contract or one-time basis.
