Photographic Equipment and Supply Terms to Know

Modern advances in photography have made it much more accessible to novices and beginners. If you're thinking of purchasing a digital or SLR camera, first learn a few things about the hobby to find the best match for you. Here are some important terms and definitions to know before heading to the photography equipment and supply retailer.

  • SLR - SLR, or single-lens reflex, is a traditional type of camera for photography enthusiasts. An SLR is a larger camera that allows the user to look directly through the lens at the image to be captured. There are digital and manual options available.
  • Backdrop - If you plan on doing portraiture with your camera, you will need to find a supply and equipment retailer that provides several types of backdrops. A backdrop is a piece of fabric, usually on a stand, that provides a balanced background that will highlight the subject. There are patterned backdrops for portraits as well as plain white and black backdrops for staging items.
  • Film - Film has taken on many forms, but the basic principle is always the same. When the shutter in the camera opens to allow the light from the image to shine through, a piece of film is exposed to that light. The film can then be mixed with chemicals to develop the image. Modern camera and equipment supply stores will offer 35mm film in color and black and white.
  • Memory Stick - Digital technology allows photographers to save their images on memory cards that can be inserted into cameras. This bypasses the need for film, but not for professional paper.
  • Photograph Paper - Developing an image, from digital or film, requires light-sensitive paper or photographic printer paper for high quality, glossy or matte images.
