If you are motivated to begin a fitness routine with a consultant or trainer, it is important not to waste your time or energy with someone that does not meet your expectations. Consider the following important tips when beginning your search for a personal trainer:

Tip #1: Check for certification and experience.
All personal trainers should hold a national certification with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, or NCCA. This will ensure that your trainer has been thoroughly trained and tested on the skills required to provide you with a safe and effective workout. While college education is not always required for personal trainer certification, it is certainly desirable. Additionally, an experienced trainer will be more in tune with how to work with you and your body type to reach your desired results. If he or she has a specialty, that is yet another thing to keep in mind. For example, if you have a previous injury, working with someone with a physical therapy background can be very beneficial.

Tip #2: Meet with the trainer.
Before you agree to hire a physical trainer, you should both speak with him or her on the phone and then meet in person for an orientation. Working through a, typically free, training session will give you a sense of how well you think you may be able to work with that individual and his or her personality type.

Tip #3: Keep rates in mind.
Ask the trainer about his or her rates and program offerings. Someone that is more expensive may also be willing to work with you at your home or even at more unconventional workout sites.
